My Toyota Avalon has 24,000 miles on it, and the tires already look like they need to be replaced.

I think they are Pirelli tires. Is it common for tires to wear this fast? My guess is they are the higher speed rated tires, that grip better. But, only 24,000 miles?

Hmm, I don't know about only 24,000 miles...

Maybe the tires were over/under inflated for a while, causing wear? Is it worn even or just along the side areas?

Probably not the case if you're already on top of all that.... What brand of tires were they by the way?

High performance tires = shorter service life

I had Z rated Dunlop SP5000s and I got 36000 miles out of them. The same tire on more powerful vehicles only got 25000 miles.

Some max performance summer tires only give you 6-10K miles on average!

Your driving style, regular tire rotation and the proper inflation will all play into the equation.

The UTOG rating is what you want to pay attention to. The higher the number, the longer the life, and usually the lower the handling performance.

what's the tread wear rating on those tires ? Speed rating and tread wear are not always related ( should be but not always ).

I ran a set of Hoosier Autocrossers on the street... treadwear rating : 0 ! But boy did they stick like glue .

The way I look at it here in Vegas , 24,000 miles is about 2 years driving and I figure to replace them anyway every 2 years due to the high heat of the roads here .

Tire life will be shortened by underinflation as well as over inflation. Driving hard will also shorten their lifespan but makes it much more fun trying to wear them out :D

Are those P205/60R16 or P205/65R15 on your Avalon ?

Hey Danbo,Are you certain your tires are not Dunlops? It seems that alot of the yotas come from the dealership with crappy tires,so you end up with the quick wear. I have had good luck with the BFG Tires, they seem to wear really well. Good luck!

I don't know Danbo but I just had a flat on my Jeep. It turns out there was an oak sliver in it about 5.5 in long!!!!!

Danbo, Visit your nearest Kelly-Springfield tire
dealer and get a set of 4 of their best
"All Season" tires that are rated "extra load".

I put a set on my Suburban and found that not only
did the ride & handling vastly improve so did wear!
Then I put a set on my son's '96 Cavalier with the
very same results. Now mind you these are street
tires not truck. With the Extra load feature the
tires have stiffer sidewall carcass to support the
tread and keep it flat on the road for even wear.

My guess is that your car's ride and handling will
also improve. Kelly-Springfield tires are not all
that well known where I live but boy!!!!!! do they
make good tires! :D :D :D

And I used to run nothing but Goodyear:rolleyes:

As I said on the other tire thread, get Road Hazard coverage on whatever tires you get. I deliver pizzas, and two of my tires were replaced free thanks to Road Hazard.

The original tires on my Avalon are, in fact, Dunlops. Treadwear 340, Traction A, Temp A.

It still seems like these tires should have lasted a lot longer.

Danbo, those are the same tires they put on most of the new toyotas, and the wear really really quick,Kuhmo, and Toyo are pretty good tires at a decent price. Good luck.
