And such... Knife Rolls

Any of you leather sheath maker peoples ever make a knife roll? If you have what do you line it with, I'm thinking about getting one, I'd prefer leather, just because it's sexier than the other materials I've seen out there...

Anyways, I'm concerned about moister on the blades. I've just noticed a bit of corrosion on a new blade that shouldn't have any... it's that new... Salt content in the air here is high that coupled with the humidity of near ocean living probably caused it (it was unintentionally sheathed for a week). I really don't want this happening to any other of my preciouses`(is that the plural of precious?)...

Funny you should bring it up, I've been asked to make one and went out this past week-end to buy the elastic.
I was planning on using upholstery leather for the lining and the flaps that wrap over the knives, but have decided against it for the very reason you're describing. So it's back to JoAnn Fabrics today (maybe) to find a light weight, felt-like fabric.
It's a work in progress, I'll post pix when I'm finished.
Sounds like you shouldn't keep your knives stored in anything that will trap air in it......

I heard it wasn't good to use upholstery leather on for this type of application, as most are chrome tanned... I'm still trying to get into the leather sheath thing so the brain isn't as full of info as everyone elses.

But yea, out here you'll you don't want to be air tight, unless it's vacuumed., and you definitely don't want to be next to things that'll trap moisture. Maybe one of those "gun rag" that are penetrated with oils... dunno...

Anyways looking forward to the pics!

I made one out of a piece of chamois that I picked up at an auto parts shop. I wouldn't want to store knives in it for long periods, but it works well for a quick carry. Being so soft it was quick and easy to sew up eight pockets, soft enough to protect the handle finishes, and looked nice... until I spilled some coffee on it... Dried pretty quickly though. :)

I hear that faux leather stuff called "ultra suede" is good stuff to line a roll with, super soft.

Unless you actually burn that stuff, it's difficult to tell them apart. The fake stuff doesn't seem as strong as real chamois, but for drying a car works as well. I don't know how each would compare keeping a knife rust-free.

Good question, I'd love to see a test run with that faux stuff. That or a micro fiber that would tend to wick moisture away.

HAH! :D yea, that guy creeps me out every time I saw him. :p Something very wrong with that boy, he just aint right in the face.

Some call it "stink eye" I just call it weird.

Those are nice Talfuchre, but I don't think it will handle my fixed blades very well. Also I live in an area with lots of salt in the air, that liner material would most likely rust my carbon steel blades quickly.

Edit, I see that you have some fixed blades towards the bottom of the post (I didn't scroll down that far initially).

Can you give me the specs on some of those and tell me what the liner material is made of?

Check the link in the thread to the maker. This is not an ad for him, of course, just wanted to post my experience.

the material is Cordura, the lining is THICK wool. You will have no issue with rust (I live in Houston - and pack carbon steel) - and it is a great roll.

THe largest blade in there is an oversized Kephart - it will fit what you need.

Thanks for the info, Talfuchre, I've run across his site several times before so no worries about being an "ad" lol. There were only 2 things that stopped me from getting one, first was the liner, and second, they're not as sexy as leather lol.

But living in Houston is still not an island in the middle of the Pacific lol but pretty close you're what 20 or so miles from the Gulf?

Anyways joking aside, do you put anything on your blades before packing them away?

Hobbyist,

Yes - a thin coat of Camellia oil. It has always worked for this Haole. ;)

Lol since my arrival I have yet to meet someone that is a "Hole" in any sense of the word other than skin tone ;)
So unless you or any one else is going to impersonate one of our gods or pretend to be sent by one, the likely hood of me and the other tribesmen rebelling is slim to none ;)

I'd throw a Texas joke out there for good measure but the only one I can think of is from Full Metal Jacket, and is sadly over played.
