And then it hit me -- the Huntsman!

My wife and I like to get the kids out of the city a lot on weekends. We'll go rent a place near the woods and spend a lot of time hiking around, maybe doing a little biking, hunting for mushrooms, etc. Naturally, I have more knives and tools than any sane man needs. :o At any rate, each time we're set to go, I'm always thinking what combination of gear to bring.

Naturally I want a blade (food prep, stick whittling, mushroom cleaning), but I also like having a smaller, secondary blade. Of course the standard assortment of drivers and can- and bottle-opener is a must. With kids (slivers) and now a new pup (ticks), I like having tweezers on hand. Also, a saw is dang handy in the woods for cutting walking sticks, and making campfires. And at night, after the kids have gone to bed, there's nothing like a quiet glass of red wine, so a corkscrew is a must. Doctor's orders, you know. ;)

A few days ago, it hit me .......... the Victorinox Huntsman! It's got everything I need, and no extra fat. I just picked one up at that big auction site. Can't wait to get it. It's a little bigger than what I'm used to carrying, so I think I'll pick up one of those Zermatt belt pouches.

What say, ye, Huntsman fans?

I've EDCed a black Huntsman for around six years now--the only time I don't have it on me is when I'm in my jammies or on a plane. :)

I am a big fan of the Huntsman and it's first cousin the Fieldmaster. They have the tools I most often need in a sak that is comfortable and pocket-able. I usually carry mine in a black nylon Vic. sheath and after trying several different styles have found it to be the most comfortable sheath by far.

I saved up and bought myself a Huntsman when I was twelve, about thirty years ago now. I remember looking at the SAK display case at all the different models many times and thinking about just the right combo of tools, and the Huntsman was it. It was my only knife and edc until I was about thirty or so, and it got used hard!

I still have it, and it shows its age and wear but is perfectly functional. It is semi-retired.

Excellent choice.

I have a Huntsman with me most days, just not on my person. For many years I carried a Fieldmaster in a belt sheath. I agree that this set up is just about perfect in terms of available tools without being so huge you cannot tote it.

Last week I replaced the cracked and worn cellidor of my Fieldmaster with nylon. Two faithful companions:

I forgot to mention the scissors. I honestly don't use scissors that much, except when I'm around my kids. Then, it always seems like I'm snipping strings off sweaters or itchy tags or shirts, and so on.

The Huntsman is a great knife, my favorite for outdoor use. I had one for more than ten years that got stolen, it was quickly replaced by the same model.
I got black nylon scales for one of mine and now is even better more scratch resistant and better grip.
For urban EDC is a little too fat to pocket carry but with the belt pouch you should be set.
Best Regards

'So where did you get replacement nylon scales? I've been looking all over for them.

I definitely got the Huntsman for outdoor use. For urban use, I'll stick with my standard carry (Case Peanut and one of the following: Victorinox Tourist or Rambler, or my Leatherman Micra)

I carried a super tinker for a while. Then, discovered a camper. Loved the saw so i sought out a better tool. Got a swisschamp. While it has EVERYTHING i would ever want, it was a bit big. One day i wrote down everything i needed in a SAK and came up with the huntsman model. I got the huntsman Lite. Love it!

Prefer the fieldmaster because of the Philips screwdriver, but the Huntsman is a great EDC. I personally don't think you need the pouch.

I love my huntsman, have it for over 20 years now.
It's my favourite non alox SAK.

I've been a Huntsman fan for many years and EDC one daily - I use a monkey fist lanyard with the ball tucked under my belt and the knife hanging free in my back right pocket - the setup makes it feel weightless.

I carry a Huntsman in my flightsuit at work. Carried in my left breast zippered pocket, it's been there so long I don't notice it.

It's nice to have the right knife for the occasion, sounds perfect. Mine is always handy for tinkering.
