And this Ladies and Gentlemen, is why we do what we do.......

This is why I wish Boy Scout enrollment wasn't so low compared to yesteryear.
Scouts are taught a great deal of things that everyone should learn.
So glad this ended well.
Way to go Scout!

I do survival and wilderness skills classes twice a year with the Boy Scouts. This kiddo wasn't one of mine, but I'm proud either way.

Taking time to teach kids these skills, is fun, fulfilling, and a great way to spend time outdoors with the kids. Just a thought.

I am with you Moose.
My grandparents, taught cub and boy scouts, my dad learned to hunt camp and even shoot in the scouts, and I was a scout as well.
Sadly by the time I became a scout a lot of the training wasn't as great, but none the less I may have to get active in the scouts to try and keep the family tradition alive.

Very nice Moose. I cant wait to get my son in the scouts when he gets a little bigger.

well, good on him for building a shelter and all...

but why was he walking *8* miles? rules #1 - stay put.

why did he get lost in the first place? seems odd.

good that he survived and was found.

Glad that it turned out well. Reminds me that I should get some appropriate training out to the 12 yr olds in my tribe.

Or compass?

My scout master was an IDIOT! At 12 I would have died.

People freak out, and think they know the way. It's very rare for someone to stay put.

Agree with you 100% Being a eagle scout and former assistant scout master, I think all boys should at least try the BSA for one year and then decide if they like it. I learned and ton and then worked at the oldest scout camp in the USA as a nature and wilderness instructor. I miss them days, then realized I needed a job. lol.

But guess they forgot to really teach the buddy system at that troop.

Amen. Scouting is one of the better things that we do in this country, and we really need to push to get those numbers up. I want a pocket knife in every pocket, and the knowledge on how to use it in every head. Along with the rest of the knowledge a person needs to survive in this world. Both outdoors and elsewhere.

We taught the Wilderness Survival merit badge this last April, and the boys had never been so excited to go to bed at 9:30 at night. They all got to sleep in their shelters they made, and every single one of 'em did fantastic. Then, right before they were scheduled to get up for the morning, it rained, for about 5 minutes, just enough to soak anyone that wasn't protected. No one got soaked, and a better test of how well they did couldn't have been done. It was great, and we had a huge mix of the older scouts helping out. Out of everything we have done, we have been told that is everyone's favorite.

How old is your boy? Cub Scouts starts pretty young, and a foundation in that really helps them do better in Boy Scouts when they turn 11 (although Webelos can join up six months early at ten and a half).

We'll see if our boy is interested when he turns 11.
I never did scouting because it was just a little too regimented for my tastes.
I preferred to just toss a tent and a canoe in the truck and head to the river (where I grew up, I was driving by the time I was 14).
Lot easier to fish for hours at a stretch when I didn't have those merit badges to worry about. :D

Pretty cool stuff - sounds like he did a good job keeping his wits about him. I still feel dirty of having opened a link on the huffington post though.
