Well guys, I think I am finally ready for my first custom ( well, when tax return comes, so I guess this is just a bit preemptive).

Those of you who know the two knives in question can tell the obvious similarities in blade shape.

But which one? I've heard the Anderson knives are incredibly tight and exact. I don't know much about ADV, but his designs are just look so badass for lack of better words. I think if I were to order either, I would attempt to get the makers tro use S30v for me.

In any case, I'd love to hear your opinions, pros/cons, etc.

Thanks for all your input,

Dan

Unfortunately I haven't had knives by either one of those makers. However your choice of steel caught my attention. In addition to S30V might I also recommend 154CM and BG-42. S30V is creating quite a craze, but after using it for most of the summer I'm still a huge fan of especially BG-42.

Which ever maker you select, I'm sure you'll be thrilled with their knives. Getting that first custom is always an exciting purchase :)

Dark Nem,

I am not opposed to BG42, actually Tom Anderson works almost exclusively in BG-42,
De Villiers on the other hand uses ATS34, which I've grown to really disklike.

Thank for your input.

This is what I found out in my case. Both knives are nicely built. Both have smooth actions, and very tight lockup. They both use quality materials in the handles and in the blade. If I could only have one it would be the Anderson. Tom builds the most precise custom folder I've ever seen. He builds his heavier than the ADV.
You almost have to hold an Anderson in your hand to understand what it is I'm talking about. I've had folders from many makers and without reservation Tom Anderson's are the most exact and precisely built of any of them.

Thanks ArtSig,

I was hoping someone had owned both knives. So the Anderson huh? I was kinda thinking that might be the favorite. But....I just love the mean look of the DeVilliers.

Do you think Tom would be willing to slightly resculpt the the butt end of Man-o-war?

Anyone else, please? I need to make a supremely informed decision, I'd never thought I'd be willing to lay out four or five hundred dollars on a knife.

Thanks again fellas,
Dan

No problem! ;)

D.C. isn't that far away. Drop me a line - I'd be glad to have you visit to my shop! :)

 I didn't expect to actually hear from Tom himself. Well I guess that settles it, a Man-o-War with slight modifications.

Tom, I won't be ready for a few months, but I'd love to come up and visit!

Thanks everyone!!!

Dan

Tom's knives are top of the line IMO. You will not find a smoother opening folder around. Great knives, great guy.
