Andre Thorburn What can you tell me

Seriously looking at purchasing an Andre Thorburn flipper. I finally located one that aesthetically appeals to me and is about the size I am looking for.

However I have some questions which I have not been able to find any information on. For instance there are a number of different models but it appears that he either produces them in a limited number and never again or they just haven't produced them lately. Secondly does he issue a warranty and is it possible to send one of his knifes back to him for sharpening like Chris Reeves or Rockstead?

You can't go wrong with a Thorburn:thumbup:

He seems to sporadically make knives without schedule and doesn't seem to make a whole lot of each model. In other words, if you see a model in a configuration you like, it's best to jump on it ASAP, since finding another one just like it will be rare. You can contact him for something custom made, but honestly, he's terrible at communication.

He offers warranty service, but I'm not sure about sharpening. The 2 Thorburns I have didn't come all that sharp, so I was better off leaving that up myself.

What model are you looking at?

I was hoping you would respond. All good info, thank you.

It's a L19f.

I had googled a bit yesterday but never did come across a webpage for him. Do you have one?

Thanks,

Dan

I think he closed his web domain, not sure why. I'll email you Andrés email address:thumbup:

Andre has been my friend for many years and I own a number of his pieces.

He is a fabulous maker and very customer orientated. His knives are superbly made and the blades are ground to perfection.

Unlike a Rockstead Andre's knives have a very conventional grind and sharpening bevel so there are many excellent sharpeners in the US who could sort you out. However should you want to send the knife back to him for re-sharpening (and please bear in mind that there are complications with International shipping in and out of South Africa) I am sure that he would take care of you.
However as far as I know he does not offer a full spa service.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of help.:)

Thanks for replying and for the valuable information.

Ah yes, I forgot all about the knife actually coming out of South Africa and possible complications.

By the way however, any idea as to whether or or not Andre has a website or not and wHat might be going on with that?

Thanks,

Dan

Not only are the knives amazing so is Andre and his wife. My wife and I met them both the last two years at Eccks. Amazing people and so open to talk with a stranger.
Sadly I hear eccks is no longer happening.

I think it would be great if he had a working website, at least I could probably get a bit more information about him and his knives.

From the above posts, it appears as though you already have a good bit of info. Apparently, his knives are superb; he is honest and a fine craftsman; you will likely not lose any money on a reasonable buy.

Losing money wasn't my concern. It's just a desire to have a bit more information that's all.

I cannot speak highly enough of Andre as a person and his work. He is a master in his craft and a gentle person always willing to teach if you are willing to learn.

Andre's website is being redesigned last time I spoke to him. It is a slow process though.

Here is a video of Andre's workshop I shot some time ago.

The below information is taken from the Knifemakers Guild of South Africa, but it is somewhat outdated to my knowledge. Andre is now the IKBS approver in South Africa due to his development and refinement becoming quite world renowned at this stage.

"André, eldest son of Tommy and Stienie Thorburn was born on May 12, 1956 in Johannesburg. He is part of an artistic family, people who can and want to use their hands and talents to glorify their Creator. He grew up on a farm outside Warmbaths, where he learned to think for him self, and work with his hands.
After school he trained as a pastor, married Marietjie and became a family man. In 1989 while pastoring a congregation in Newcastle he met Roelf Swanepoel who introduced him to the art of knife making. He sold his golf clubs and club cart and built his first belt grinder. After a few months they moved to Cato Ridge where he had to find out and sort out knife making all on his own. He sold his first knife in 1990 to a friend and became a full time knife maker in 1996.

He became a member of the Knife Makers Guild of Southern Africa in 1995. He believes that custom knives must be excellent in form and function, therefore he also conducts knife-making courses to help new knife makers excel.

He sold many knives to overseas customers (on prime internet sites such as Knifeart.com) and since 1999 attended knife shows in Europe. Paris (France) Bern and Lugano (Switzerland) Solingen and Munich (Germany) and Gembloux (Belgium) in 2001 he also became a member of the German Knife Makers Guild.

He specializes in fully engraved hunters and folders that echoes African touches and with precise mechanisms. He adds detail to his knives with very fine file work on blades, spacers and liners. He uses exotic handle materials such as: Mother of Pearl, Mammoth ivory, Arizona Desert Ironwood, Maple and Amboine burl and other stabilized woods as well as the local Giraffe bone (stained and stabilized), Warthog tusks, Hippo ivory and Buffalo horn. Blade materials are: Damasteel from Sweden, 12C27 Sandvik from Sweden, 440C (N690) Bohler from Austria, BG42 and high quality Damascus made by e.g. Darryl Meier and Etttoré Gianferrari a local Damascus artist who has won several prices for his exceptional work. He uses only Titanium liners (anodized or plain) and Teflon shims on his liner locking folders. He also colours some of the 304 stainless steel bolsters. Engraving on his knives is done by Helene van Wyk and Scrimshaw by Sharon Burger and Melody de Wit.

Being a full time knife maker he sorted out systems in his workshop to enable him to produce art knives and functional working knives in a short time. He supplies the local market with hand made knives as corporate and promotional gifts where the company logos and clients names are etched on the blades.

In November 2003 he won the “Best Folder Award” at the IMA 2003 in Munchen Germany."

Andre also one best tactical knife at the recent USN Gathering show with his collaboration piece between himself, Andre van Heerden and Tashi Bharucha

My pleasure Dan.

I don't know why Andre's site is down but what I can say is that folks of his generation are not hugely tech savvy (no offence to anyone intended:o). I can only assume that something happened with the hosting and he has yet to sort it out.

What I can say is that because of the logistics between South Africa and the US it is much easier for Andre to sell in the US through dealers so he is not taking many individual orders. Also Andre Thorburn is one half of a collaboration team with Andre van Heerden called A2. (A Squared) They make some fantastic collaborations which are becoming more and more popular so Andre is very busy with that.

If you email him directly I am sure that he will sort you out. Here is one of my A2's. They are fantastic knives..........

Personally I was looking for something a bit smaller and more refined, hence the L19F but that's a fabulous looking knife. Makes me wish I went for something like that as well. I did sort of wonder why I was seeing some of those A2's when searching to purchase a knife from him and I wasn't exactly sure why. Thanks for the information.

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks for sharing. This is exactly what I was looking for.

Well I just finalized the deal so hopefully I'll get this one and my Rockstead Shu by the end of the month. Extremely excited about getting both as they both have been on my list for awhile. But now that I have actually ordered the Andre Thorburn I can actually see where a second one might not be out of the question. Of course I'll have a better feel for that when I actually get the first one in my hands.

Thanks everybody,

Dan

Its my most expensive knife. its like no other knife I own, and I have close to 100.To polish titanium like a mirror must take a lot of work.Im sure this engraving takes a lot of work, too. For the money ive never seen a knife so polished and decorated that I liked this much. The strongest and most effortless flipper ive ever fired.
