This may sound like an uneducated question as far as knife production is concerned,But I have always wondered why Busse could not sell an unfinished knife? By this I mean that after the knife is ground I am sure it is then heat treated before applying the coating and handle slabs. My question is why couldnt Busse sell a knife that is uncoated, with no handles,no sheath, and no warranty for just an all around beater and chopper?I know I would buy it.Is this feasable or would it be more costly to do so?I would love to have a rough ground heat treated beater and make my own sheath and handles if desired.

Marsupial - my suggestion to you would be to check out the Swamp Rat line of knives. They have less expensive handles and overall are tremendous value - especially for the quality of knife you receive.

To answer your question more directly, after cutting and grinding and providing the INFI, I don't know that your "unfinished" Busse would be that much less to buy. Certainly the micarta handles aren't cheap, but, much of the cost is already in the knife. Lots of people would love a Porsche engine, but as far as I know Porsche doesn't sell those separately !

Hope that helps.
