In an attempt to pay back some of the great info that's been shared here, this is a little device I picked up recently on amazon (but which appears to be fairly widely available elsewhere).

This inexpensive angle finder works great for those of us who may wish to either set a bench stone to a pre-determined angle or measure the slope of a fixed or adjustable base for the hone. (Most times I just freehand by holding a hone in my hand but there are times when I want the bevel and edge to be worked at a particular angle.)

This one features both a magnetic and non-magnetic base which makes it easy to use the angle finder with your various diamond, ceramic or other bench stones. (Also works on pipe and other DIY tasks around the home or shop.)

I used it this afternoon to prop the DMT D8EE to a 15 degree angle for a quick touch-up and it worked great.

I happened to purchase mine from amazon as I was getting a book anyway and took advantage of the free shipping on orders over $25.

Here's the link:

I got the same one at Home Depot when I started free hand sharpening. Don't use it too much now but it's great to check an angle.

I bought one similar a few years ago but it didn't have the magnetic base.

The needle on mine didn't move very smoothly. Does this one move smoothly?

Can't beat the price....

It seems pretty good. It's not "catching" and moves consistently toward the same angle reading each time.

That's a great one!

Eventually, the urge to switch up to a Wixey digital angle finder will kick in. It won't matter for any practical reason and yet it will show up.

Happened to me. True story.

I actually purchased this as an alternative to the more expensive digital angle readers since it's something I'll only use occasionally. (But I had looked at the higher end models.)

Good thinking! Saves more money for a laser goniometer to find out if your blade's angles match up with the stone's angles.

I bought a similar gauge from Lee Valley for the same reason - very handy, allows me to use my benchstones like an oversized Sharpmaker. Yours is more cost-effective than mine though.
