What are some practical ideas about using a angle grinder to flat and hollow grind blades. I have seen some pretty nice blades that were ground out with an angle grinder with the blade clamped in a vise. One thing I can say is it is safer as the blade is clamped and cannot get loose or thrown as in hand holding on a belt grinder. Critisism is welcomed too.

I used an angle grinder for the first couple years. Its one of those tools you think you can make do with but there's no substitution for the proper tools. Not sure how many blades I've ground on a belt grinder and I can't remember having one come out of my hand while grinding. An angle grinder is still a good tool to have. Just make sure you know where the sparks are going to land before you use it.

Yea you can get dangerous with the sparks down range. My long term plan is a belt grinder its just not a tool you can get here very easy as its not commen and is heavily taxed if imported to Thailand.
The biggest problem with an angle grinder is heat since you have the bar clamped you dont feel the temp and dont keep it as cool as if you were holding it with hands.I think the actual grinding pad gets hotter to and can make deeper scratches in the surface. Like anything you have to be careful.

I recently got an angle grinder, thanks to my father. I now use it to hog off steel before going to my belt sander. I am a hobby maker who makes a few blades here and there, and I use a 2x42 grinder from Sears. I love the angle grinder for how it quickly removes a lot of steel. My belts last longer and I get to the final product quicker. If all I had was hand files and the angle grinder, I could do the same job too. Wonderful tool for sure. Though one that demands a lot of respect. Any cutting tool rotating at 11 000 rpm does!
