i'm not good at free hand sharpening....is there some type of angled device i can attach or rest my knife on so that i get the same angle on both sides on a diamond stone ....a sharpmaker or similar device is just not practical (for me) in the field or my BOB backpack

thanks........Bill

BTW i just bought my first david winston knife (awaiting delivery)......anyone own one?? how do you like it??

I think buck made something like that once. Not sure if they're still around. Global has some things you hook on the back of their knives to get the right angle. There are all kinds of rolling angle guides for plane blades, but I really haven't seen anything practical for knives. I just use a little stainless steel protractor but if you are backpacking, the best bet for you is probably just using a coin stack to set the angle and practice keeping your wrist from turning

Check out Razor Edge products. They make a device that gets put onto the knife, and it holds a constant angle while using regular stones.

Haven't tried it myself, but I have heard good things about them.
