I am going to get some DMT stones and have seen from several YouTube videos where guys have holders for their stones that create various angles... not like the kits.. but like big leather or wood wedges they lay the stones on, then just draw back towards themselves (or away depending on their preferance) holding the knife horizonal.

Are these usually homemade or is there a place to buy?

Can you post one of the videos? There are heaps of jigs and rigs that measure angles and hold it.

Why not just cut a wedge out of a piece of hardwood and mount it to the stone with electrical tape?

When I want my bench stone set at a particular angle (like Vassili has his for example) I clamp my DMT base in a vise at the appropriate setting.

I've used it with DMT and Spyderco stones from 6"x2" on up. (The base has a hand grip on the underside which allows good purchase and grip between the flat sides of the vise jaws.

It works quite well.

Are you talking about my videos?

I went to Woodcraft store, pick piece of basswood and ask them to cut it
diagonally under 15 degree. Then I glued leather to it, so it wil not slide.

But you can go to HomeDeport and pick Redwood.

This is no big deal.

In time I understand that this is not angle, what is important but space left and right from stone to hold knife by hand. It is much more convenient then when stone lays on the flat table.

Thanks, Vassili.

Here's the setup I was referring to above for those who may wish to do something similar:

I just prop up my stones in a rubber stone holder onto my other stones at whatever angle I need (I have to mix and match the stones to the right height for whateven angle I am shooting for) with the backsplash of my counter as a backing so the stones don't slip. The adjustable rubber stone holder holds the particular stone I am using securely and an angle indicator like Blues's picture shows to make sure the stone is at the right angle. I try to hold the knife as close to horizontal as possible, and I get pretty crisp and defined corners where the bevel meets the primary grind, so I am doing something right as far as holding my angle steady. Of course it is still freehand so the edge itself has a tad of convexing in it, and I usually finish with the final grits a couple degrees above the main angle I sharpen at to make sure I get rid of the burr and have a durable edge. A vice like Blues's is really nice and something I want to look into, as it is a pain in the butt sometimes to mix and match my DMT stones and Spyderco stone holders to prop my stone holder on, but it has worked for me for the last couple years and I am pretty happy with the results. My outlook is that the price is right and I am happy with my edges, even if it seems like a half ass setup.

Mike,

The vise was very inexpensive and is also portable so it can be set up virtually anywhere. (Though it can also be mounted to the workbench with bolts should one want to do so.)

I gotta say, the best angle holder I've found is my thumbs. I hold the knife with both hands sharpening with my my hand on the top of the blade contacting the stone. If its a real crazy re beveling it will get sore for a couple hours, but otherwise nothing. Works perfectly for me if your more hands on.
