Most coworkers have called me the Bear or "El Oso" for many years, and it is the animal that shows up from time to time in my dreams....I feel a kinship.....I suppose that means something....I'm just not sure what.

It was the main belief system in England {& probably most of Europe.} before the Christians arrived.

I like it.

Roman Animism
the Roman Eagle (Aquila) was the Divine Standard of it's legion, held in reverence with the other lesser standards in a
special tent but in a central position of honour. It was the soul of the legion, which could not exist without it.

the standard of the 13th legion (Legio XIII Gemina)

aquila2.jpg

it was carried by an Aquilifer, a senior NCO who would be a veteran of many
battles and would defend the Eagle with his life, the british defence of their regimental standards and
the french of their napoleonic 'eagle' is a pale imitation of the Legion's worship.

here is another Aquilifer, wearing a bear's skull/skin over his helmet, standing next to his centurio.

no actual roman eagle has ever been found, the rough depictions in statuary have been used to base construction of replicas like the ones above.

The animalisation of humans is as mysterious as the humanisation of animals .

Of course there is degree and that is where our understanding and misunderstandings come in . We are only human after all . L:O:L

I read that it was a goal of Roman enemies to try to steal the standard. That if this happened, it could demoralize the armies.

I always thought that "animism" strictly speaking was seeing spirit entities in almost everything. The animals representing entities was more a totemic concept, or in WICCA a "familiar."

I asked for the spirit of the wolf, but was given the spirit of the eagle.

Afterwards, I found they were opposites. I have a tatoo of the silhouette of a golden eagle.
