Im watching it as I type. The Grizzly Bear attack episode in Montana. This particular show had me choked up. Ive watched several now and havent seen a knife used yet.

One thing Ive learned from this program , is that things go bad fast and then gets worse. You guys are all fans of the show, right?

It's a good show. Everyone in my family likes it quite a bit, although I think for different reasons.

I love this show, I watch it all the time, alot of the situations could be avoided with a little common sense and the people could all use a survival kit, especially specific items. On alot of the shows, a Knife, compass and a signal mirror would have saved the day along with some common sense. It is a great show, I just wish they would give a short spill at the end on how to avoid the situations in the show and how to over come the situation if you find your self in it.

My wife and I both watch and love that show.

I figure I can learn as much of what to do as I will--what not to do.

I havent seen the one on Animal Planet. Ive only seen the "I Shouldnt Be Alive" show that was on Discovery about 2 years ago. Is it the same?

I watched a few episodes and enjoyed them. The last one I watched was with a young couple on vacation. They wandered off the trail to see a waterfall. From that point on it was 1 stupid mistake after another. They should have named that episode, I am too stupid to survive, but lucky as hell...

I saw that Grizzley bear episode as well, and that choked me up a bit as well.

That show drives my wife crazy. She's always going on about how irresponsible the victim's decisions were and how they could have prepared a little with basic equipment.
On many levels I agree but the show does serve as a warning.
I guess you never expect to be in any of those scenarios and I respect the people who bear it all on national television and relive their ordeals. Some of the stories are downright heart wrenching, especially the one with the scouts who were rescued but one ended up dying of his dehydration (despite being found by the medical professionals who happened to be kayaking in the area).

i love this show its fastly becoming my fav show besides king of the hill LOL im watchin it right now about a skydiver whos plane went down now hes in the ocean and hes floating into jellyfish

Is the show title short for:
I shouldn't be alive according to Darwin:
Darwin - 0
Lady Luck - 1

Because I could understand how that might be a bit long for a TV show title.
I agree that you can learn a lot from these shows, as long as you can recognise what the people did wrong and what their decisions should have been at each step. You should also have the ability to make the right decisions when you are in the situation, not just when you are analysing it from the couch in front of the TV.

Most of us on these forums are gear heads so we are better equipped than the average person, so with some reasonably sensible decisions we can keep safe easily enough. I don't go into the wild without carrying on me knives, flashlights, lighters & other useful tools. I see people get into trouble and I just don't get why someone would walk around without even a humble SAK - what is wrong with people? Don't they realise how cheap and how useful a SAK is? Of course most people wont carry as much gear as me, but a small flashlight & a SAK would really not be a bad minimum carry for every person in the world IMO.

Theres one on right now where the gut is actually prepared. His survival gear is on his quad, but his quad is on top of him. He broke his axe trying to move it. He skinned a beaver, with some sort of blade, to use for warmth. Got to get back to the show.

One of my tramping buddies is a bushcraft instructor. She talks in her classes about lots of little things going wrong adding up to a big thing, like lining up a row of ducks in a shooting gallery.

One little thing goes wrong, that's OK, you can deal with it, but then there's a second little thing, then a third, fourth, fifth.... suddenly all these little things add up to one big thing and you are in serious trouble.

Survival training consists of (1) taking care of the little things beforehand, if you can, and (2) recognising when the little things have added up to a big thing and it's time to turn back (something called a heuristic trap).

I liked that show. They ended up in a place of no escape and found the body of someone who appeared to be an experienced hiker and camper. The guy came up with a plan to escape that worked. Dont want to spoil it.

I dont consider these people stupid just because they dont read w&ss. The couple who got lost on vacation was following a stream to get out . That was their plan. Im not familiar with mountain terrain and would probably have attempted the same thing.

I am wondering, if you have seen the show? Yes, there are some stupid mistakes..but most of the ones I watched..people with some experience had a run of bad luck..like the guy sailing around the world..I believe he was from Boston, and survived 67 something days at sea..alone, in a survival raft. That was a tough one to watch...that guy went through HELL, IMO...Shark attacks, Dehydration, punctured raft, ...rough seas...terrible stuff.
You know what, he survived because he was tough as hell, and smart as a mother F-er.
Now that stupid British guy who went into the Amazon...and killed his only friend, his dog...I hate that SOB. I will never forget how stupid he is...the worst part is he has a following..like he's a bad ass for basically having a horse shoe stuck up his ass. What a moron.

Now...I guess I can chime in to the OP and say..I love this show to.
Pretty cool. It sounds like a dont watch it enough...you guys are mentioning a lot of shows I havnt seen.

I haven't watched the show but I did read about the idiot that ate his dog. That was the one I was mainly thinking of when I posted.

Let's face it - no matter how well equipped & how skilled, sometimes you can be unlucky. But the better prepared you are the luckier you seem to be. Obviously there are times where a hiker gets in trouble and would have been much better off if they were carrying a whistle, lighter, flashlight, knife, emergency blanket, FAK, SAK, something to boil water in, etc. When people go into the wilderness poorly equipped and only survive due to blind luck then you just shake your head wondering how that can be fair when others that did everything right died through bad luck.

Hmmm, a search reveals that there are episodes of this show that I could download - maybe I should actually watch a few episodes.

They are in the middle of a marathon with shows scheduled until tomorrow morning. I and family have caught most of the episodes earlier and like it.
