Need some help guys. Have a customer who wants a new handle put on his buck 120. Problem is that I can't seem to get the tang annealed. Buck uses 440C, which I'm not familiar with, I use 5160. Anyway I've heated it up to a nice blue and let it cool 2 times which doesn't phase it. Would putting it in vermiculite help, I'm afraid that this might keep the heat sink paste from doing it's job. Any ideas?

I should have mentioned that it's gonna be a partial tang design. Will a cobalt bit drill it without oil, I'd hate to get oil in the horn handle when fitting it with a pin?????????????????????

I just finished a similar project, and had to drill the tang on a Buck Vanguard.

I wrapped the blade with thick felt soaked in water and then put it in the freezer for four hours.

I then heated the spot on the tang where I wanted the hole to a bright cherry red.

I immediately put the blade into a bucket of hardwood ashes and left it for about an hour to cool as slowly as possible.

After all that it only took two drillings with titanium bits to complete the hole. One very small bit and then another the size I wanted.

Good Luck! Post a pic when you get it finished.

You can drill dry but the bit dulls quicker and builds up heat so I suggest you put the horn in place, drill through the horn until you mark the tang, remove the horn and finish drilling. This way you can use oil when drilling and not stain the horn.

I use double sided carpet tape to hold the scale in place during the drilling, that way it is easy to remove for final touchup before gluing.

Hello,

best way i have found and done on all kinds of steel is to Heat up the Tang area to Red/orange, best done in low light or dark shop. then
shove into a coffee can full of Silica sand

it will Drill like Butter.
