annealed question

That depends on the steel and how it's been annealed. In any case it's certainly easier to work than a hardened blade !!

well i was just wondering b/c i've been working with some 5160 that the guy i got it from said was annealed but i've been having a LOT of trouble with it, like wearing down hacksaws and stuff but today i was working with some mild steel and used a drill bit that i'd used on the 5160 earlier and had a lot of trouble with it chipping and screaming and breaking but with the mild steel it went right through it, and so i finally realized i might not be a moron after all! so i was just checking to see if it should be softer which it sounds like it might be, what about 5160?

Mild steel is by its makeup softer and easier to work than High Carbon steel.Annealing the HC steel makes it easier to work, but still harder than mild steel. If any steel seems too hard,re-anneal it yourself, then you know its state.I have found a lot of variety in what suppliers call "annealed".
