Have a few billets of normalized 1095. I have always bought everything already annealed so want to confirm this process. Sorry I know it’s been asked a million times but usually so many answers. I will be using a kiln and not a forge. And after it reaches the 1200 do I air cool from there?

Thanks

Annealing:
Heat to 1475°F. Furnace cool to 1200°F at a rate not exceeding 50°F per hour.

The problem with 1095 is that if the steel is near the transition temperature for along time the carbon can diffuse toward the grain boundaries . Large amounts of carbides in the grain boundaries , even more problem when you have continuous carbides makes for extremely brittle blades .Once you get past the transition then air cool.
