Annealing a SS liner

I am in the process of modding a Kershaw Half ton. I need to drill and tap some holes in the SS liner. It seems to be hardened, messed up and dulled the drill bit.

Can I spot anneal the liner where I need to drill and tap some holes? I've done it with carbon steel, but never tried it on stainless steel.

Thanks,

Ric

I changed the clip to tip up and a different clip as well and I just drilled the liner hard but it was a pain in the butt. You can just use a better drill bit and go slow and keep things cool and lubed and it sould work fine ,also use a drill press if you can . I ended up breaking two bits and dulling one but I used a hand held drill and not enough lube and the last hole was not easy. Tapping went really well considering I had never done it before.

take a nail or round steel that matches the diameter of the hole you're drilling, flatten one end, and chuck it in the drill with the flat end out. Then (and I reccomend using a drill press,) "drill" the nail where you want the steel annealed until you see it blue.

Try using a cobalt drill with cutting fluid. Do not run at a high speed. Drill press is much better then a hand drill.

Many stainless steels are air hardening, and won't anneal by just heating.
You probably just need a better drill bit, run slowly.

Thank you for the good advice. I decided to try a cobalt bit. It worked great, no problems. Had half a dozen holes done in a few minutes.

I am in the process of making some wood scales for my Kershaw. I needed to drill and tap some 2-56 threads to hold the scales on.
