Annealing brass rod

What is proper method for annealing brass rod(welding rod) Would like to use it for peined pins in a folder.
 
Heat it up and stick it in water. You can probably do this with a hand-held propane torch.
 
You don't have to stick it in the water. Annealing starts about 450F .Easiest to heat to red and cool.
