Is there an easy way to anneal D2? Man, this stuff is fierce? After all this is done I need to heat treat it. Any sugestions? I usually forge 5160, 1095 and O1. I want to try stock removal on some D2 planer blades and it just eats up my belts.

Thanks for any information you forumites can give me.

CAL:
Annealing temp is 1600 to 1650 degrees F. If you have an oven the info is on the Crucible Service Centers page. If you need an outside treater Texas Knifemakers Supply is good and they do cryo too.

Thanks P.J. Another dumb question, What do I do with it after I get it up to that temp? How is it cooled to make it soft? I need to drill it and it is to hard right now. I can use the forge to get it to that temp but, will that do anything to the "stainless" qualities of D2. I know it is not a true "stainless" but, it widthstands rust better than 5160. Thanks for any info I can get.

Cal:
D-2 is an air hardening steel, to anneal it has to be cooled slowly, in the oven is how I do it. I don't think a forge will work for this but there may be a way someone might be able to help with.
The forge question is from memory, high school ag shop, I don't think it will affect the chrome content but the carbon content can be changed with a coke/coal forge.
HELP, if this is wrong please advise with correct information.

Thanks again P.J. Buy the way, It is a gas forge. Maybe I can bring it up to temp, shut off the forge and let it cool overnight? What do you think about that?

CAL: I'm not familiar with gas forges, if it will hold the heat it should work. Also if you wrap the steel in SS foil it won't scale.
