I've tried the search function no luck. I have some old saw blades, I assume they are L-6, how do I anneal them to make them soft/workable??
Thanks

L-6 annealing - heat to 1400-1450F [just above magnetic ]cool slowly in ashes. Or you could subcritical anneal at 1200F for at least two hours

If you dont have an oven where you can monitor the temp you can heat with a torch untill the metal is glowing red. You want to stop heating as soon as you get to the point that the metal is glowing, If you get it to hot you will have heavy scale. I let the metal cool in cat litter. I know this is not the best way to do it, but it works for me.

When I'm done forging I fill my forge with steel that needs to be annealed and let slow cool. This stuff RC out at about RC7-10. A ten minute soak in my Paragon kiln at 1200 gives me about RC18-RC20. A full slow cooled anneal from 1200 in my Paragon gives me RC8-13...Ed
