Hello,

I'm Gert Mathys from Belgium. I'm a hand engraver. I would like to do some engraving on a 32 layer VG10 core stainless damascus Kitchen knife.
To be able to engrave this knife I need to anneal it, engrave and then re-harden it. I've got a good kiln and some tool wrap... Does anyone know what temperatures/time need to be used to anneal and harden this kind of stuff?
Thanks!

I have this type of knife in my kitchen and I'm very happy with them. I wonder if engraving is a good way to procede .You have three different stainless steels in the blade . Annealed or hardened they will engrave differently. Laser engraving ? etching ?
Let me do some research on the HT.

Thanks mete! I would love to hand engrave a knife like that, in fact make one for an art project I've been having in mind for a long time.

According to the company [www.e-tokko.com ]
VG-10 Anneal - 830-880 C
Quench from 1050 - 1100 C , in air or oil
Temper - 150-250 C

I would recommend wrapping in foil and 'plate quenching ' that is take blade , in the foil, and put between two aluminum plates, with moderate pressure. Temper immediately .
When you finish the project please post photos.
You don't have to worry about the 'damascus' as they are not the working part of the blade .
