annealing stainless?

i've never worked with stainless so i have no idea - is the annealing process different from other steels? what do i need to do?

not looking to make a blade...just trying to soften some stainless rod so it's easier to peen when i'm pinning handles...

If it's 300 series stainless ( nonmagnetic)just heat it red hot and let it cool. Other types would require heating but cooling very slowly.
