I know some of you wanted to find out the decision I made for my 10 year anniversary after having the idea contest earlier. Well I went with several of the suggestions, and some I even had before the contest. John and glennbad put me over the top though with the idea of making her something. I decided to make her a halltree type piece of furniture and surprise her with it when she got home from work.

Early that morning I had a card and decoy gift for her. I had left her a few notes that she'd find while getting ready for work, and surprised her with lunch at school. Then when she got home from work I had her new piece of furniture in the hall. The next week during fall break I did manage to take her to the restaurant we went to on our first official date- The Whistle Stop in Glendale Ky. I think she'll keep me!

She has picked out a paint color and coat hooks. So, I'm in the process of painting it. Here's a primed photo.

Now for the Birthday Ramble and info on how the Kentucky Woodsman came to be.

I had an EWOK on order from John for the fall (I think this was in 2010). Well, John was planning his first gathering at the shop and I talked my wife into a roadtrip. While there I mentioned John's Pack Knife in conversation. My wife ended up surprising me with one for my birthday in June.

Since the Pack Knife and EWOK were similar in size I asked John if it would be alright to change my order. John was very accommodating and suggested I design my own knife. After several drawings and a few emails back and forth, the Kentucky Woodsman was born. One of, if not the most comfortable handle on a knife I own.

What I wanted it for

Ramble done, thanks

Thanks Derek, and congratulations!

Sounds like you have made your wonderful wife very happy - well done, but I expected no less from you, sir.

Your Woodsman is a great knife, another great player in the history of JK Knives, and one people should consider.

I wish there were places where you could handle all of John's knives, that would sell a lot of those designs where there are just a few in the wild - such as your Woodsman design.

best

i'd say she was probably happy with that :), very nice piece of furniture to, thanks for sharing

Wow. I'm sure impressed. That takes a lot of work and a ton of talent.
Well done sir!

That turned out great! The fact that you took the time to make something like that meant a lot to her, I'm sure.

Good job!

I can't let my wife see this. this is exactly what she wants at our front door and I don't have your talent sir!! very nicely done.

That looks great, you have a real talent!

Y'all give me too much credit. I've got a few tools and can follow a set of plans.

It's not like I can take a piece of steel and free hand grind a perfect centered edge and square ricassos. Then heat treat it to a desired result, and finish it up with handles without gaps, etc. That takes talent from a true craftsman.
