After having almost $2000 worth of orders cancelled today, I`m going to be taking some time off from making knives after the batch I`m working on now is finished. Maybe I`ll try to make some knives to post for sale, and see how that goes. After that I`m going to contact people with October orders to see if they might want their orders moved into September. After that, I`m not sure what my future plans will be.
Here is the updated schedule. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1133051-Knives-On-Order-2014

sorry for the canceled orders, john, don't know what to tell you, seems money always gets tight around this time of year, i guess, not that's any cancellation or explanation.

:(

John, this is bullshit.

I hope he had a heck of an excuse.

IMO, people who cancel orders should get their own thread in GB&U.

That sucks. Custom maker etiquette says you shouldn't charge up front for work, but then when orders get cancelled, the maker is left holding the bill for materials.

I know we all have money stuff that comes up, but if you make an agreement for an order, you should man up to your money obligations, regardless. Maybe pay for the cost of materials at the very least, and if the materials are able to be sold down the line, then some kind of refund can be given.

That's rotten...

I`m going to write this up as one of those things I should expect. I`m also going to get "back in the saddle" and grind up a couple this coming week to post for sale.

I saw all of those knives pop up on your order list, I was kinda' expecting that one to fall out.

I think people get "big eyes" and then when the time comes to cough up the money, all of a sudden "things come up" etc etc.

Hopefully you did not turn down any other orders to put that mass order on your books, and like we discussed, asking for that up front money for the materials prevented you from spending a bunch of money on materials for an order that was going to flake out.

Enjoy your break and new job at the worm ranch!

I second this -

It could be a simple "Orders canceled" thread, and a running total in the first post with a screen name and the canceled order count.

At least the membership could use that data to establish a pattern.

I'm so sorry to hear this John. I hope you can make it through this and continue on your road to success.

Sorry to hear that Mr. K , I think 50% up front or pay for cost of material will have to be your new practice , it's away to at least protect yourself . It's a shame that this will affect your loyal customers
but I am sure everyone here would understand .

The guy bit off more than he could chew & had to spit it out.

Glad you weren't out the material cost, that would've made the hurt worse.

Congrats on going GOLD Brad!
