OK gang.. here is whats new!

First off, this is CAMILLUS CUTLERY's 125th anniversery! We are the oldest continous knife factory in the USA! To celebrate this, we decided to make a special knife. While CAMILLUS is rooted in tradition, we wanted to go with something new, and something hot! Well DDR's EDC fits the bill. We took the basic EDC, souped it up with a 154cm blade, and gave the blade and frame a coat of TitainiumCarboNitride[black]. We coated all of the small parts...screws, pivot, thumstuds, and pocketclip with matte TitainiumNitride[gold]. All this with a special etch and presentation box.....very sweeet! They are availible now, but strike fast, because we are only making 1000. Suggested retail of $125.

Next up, is the knife the Bladeforums Knifenuts have been asking for...the EDC in TALONITE! The same EDC that everybody seems to love, but with a TALONITE blade....its gonna be kewl. Oh yeah, to set the knife off visually, the TALONITE version will wear Ti-Nitride[matte gold] screws and pocketclip....very classy. Suggested Retail $220[same as the Mini Talon]. We should be delivering in August, so get your orders in now with your favorite online dealers.

Last, but certainly not least, we have a very special collaboration coming up....Jerry Fisk. Jerry is not only an American Bladesmith Society MASTER SMITH, but was also inducted as an official NATIONAL LIVING TREASURE a couple of years ago. See past issue of BLADE MAGAZINE for the story. He is truly a special person, who builds special knives. We already have a collaboration with Jerry in the BK&T line, with the MAGNUM CAMP KNIFE, and now we are moving on to something new, O.V.B.

In the 30's, CAMILLUS made a line of pocketknives for a hardware distributor[OEM production] called "Our Very Best" or known as O.V.B. They are very collectoble, and known for their flawless quality. We recently aquired that trademark, and decided to do something special. We are going to use the OVB brand for high end "Best Grade" traditional knives[mainly collaborations] centered around TRADITIONAL formats. In this case, we will be producing a version of Jerry's 7.5" Bowie knife, with carbon steel blade[0170-6C], satin finished, with a steel guard, and curly maple handle. Leather sheath of course, in the traditional style. The knives will carry the OVB crest, and be dated and numbered. We will make 500 of this model, this year. Suggested retail of $250. We are planning on delivery by xmas. I'll keep everybody informed as we get closer.

Get your orders in early, as we took orders on the first 200 at bladeshow!

One very important note on this knife. We spent 2 days after the Bladeshow out at my Dad's and my hunting camp with DDR, Jerry Fisk, Dexter Ewing, Ethan Becker, Bob Baily[Elite Tatical Carry Systems] and CAMILLUS' President, Jim Furgal. We had a ball, unwinding from the show, and playing with knives. I mean serious knife testing, like only a MASTER SMITH can do! One thing CAMILLUS is really committed to, is making the Fisk OVB knife perform as closely to his custom pieces as we can, without paying him to forge them! Jerry is already VERY impressed with out heat treatment of 0170-6C steel, and we will work VERY CLOSELY with him on the desing and the edge geometry. His knives cut like a light saber on crack, and we will get VERY CLOSE in production. VERY CLOSE. We have a plan.....its gonna be kewl!

I know I've missed some details, so ya'll fire away...I'll answer as best as I can. Jerry and DDR can help all they want, hint, hint.

Thanks Will for the info. All the knives sound interesting.

Hate to say this, but frankly, setting a limit of 250, then selling 200 of those fortunate enough to be able to afford/attend Blade, seems a bit elitist to me. With 11K members here, and just a few hours delay in reading your post, and most who might be interested in the Fisk knife are SOL. Frustrating, and not the sort of behavior by a knife company designed to endear it to many prospective customers.

Hi Will

Can we see pics?

Hate to put it so bluntly....

If not, at least a pic of the actual bowie you're basing yours off? I'm interested, but i want to see one first, if possible....

Bugs,
Before you sling accusations around about folks being "Elitist", read my post again please. I said that we will make 500 pieces this year, not 250. The only place I mention "250" is regarding the suggested retail price, of $250.

Keep in mind also, that we took orders for knives at the BLADESHOW from DEALERS, who will in turn sell them to individuals. Hopefully to Bladeforums Knifenuts

. At this time I know of NO KNIVES that have been reserved by individual customers. That would be between you and your dealers. In the online community, if memory serves me correctly, I believe that AG Russell has reserved some, along with www.knifecenter.com , and www.bestknives.com , and www.crspecialties.com .

I hope this info helps, and I would contact one of these dealers and get on the thier list if you wanted to be sure to get an OVB FISK Bowie. If nothing else, it wil help you get a low number.

I think the BK&T Products are outstanding, any addition to that Product Line is a great idea IMO.

Also, your choice to use the Highest grade of materials on some of the new designs is outstanding. Lots of Knuts like me are always thrilled to get the best materials and greatest Designs at affordable prices.

Is the Talonite model the 3" EDC or a larger version? Will the handle still be steel or will it be Ti?

The only reason I ask is $65 for the great 154CM model is great, $220 for a Talonite model is very expensive. Is Talonite worth that price?

General,
Yup, the TALONITE EDC will be the same size and bladeshape. Understand, a VERY expensive blanking dies punches out the frames for the EDC, so we won't be making another size EDC without REALLY feeling we need to. But we are at least THINKING about it. The earliest would be 2002 IF we decide to. Tooling takes time and $$$$$. Yes the frames will be heat treated stainless, as we can't blank out Ti.

Regarding your last question, yes, we feel its worth it. Do you know of any other TALONITE bladed frame locks you can buy in that price range. Or any TALONITE bladed folders at all? Also, compare apples to apples....the 154cm EDC has a suggested retail of $84, but you can buy it on the "street" for $65. Well, the TALONITE EDC will carry a SUGGESTED retail price of $220[same as the MINI TALON]. I would bet you will find the TALONITE EDC somewhere on the internet or mail order for less than $220.

Whether its worth it to YOU, is entirely up to you, but I'll say response at the BLADESHOW was VERY positive.

Thanks for the interest!

Talonite is easily worth the price to me. Call me crazy, but I'd take a Talonite EDC over a Seb. I like the Talonite that much. Corrosion resistance is a very big deal to me for certain applications.

Thanks for putting me in the picture Will.

I did not realise Talonite was so expensive, I realised it was more expensive than even the CPM series steels, but the difference came as a shock for me. Still, that said, it would be the cheapest folder in that material and lets face it, Talonite would be perfect in a small knife! If I get my situation sorted soon, I will buy one of those! Thanks.

General,
To further illustrate the TALONITE cost issue's...a quality steel, like 154CM will run you somewhere between $8-10 per pound. THis is considered EXPENSIVE steel, by a company that has been using 420HC, 440A, and 1095 carbon for years. 154CM at that cost DOES affect the final cost of a knife compared to 420HC. NOW.....

TALONITE runs around $175 to $185 per pound, depending on the size of the billet and thickness you buy!!!!! Then its MUCH more difficult to work with after you get it: harder to cut, harder to grind, harder to finish. Custom makers like the fact that they don't have to heat treat it. But in our case, the savings is VERY minimal, since we have our own heat treat operation running all the time, it cost us very little to heat treat.

Thanks for the interest, when they hit the street, I think you will like them!

Wow! It looks like you will be offering them practically at cost then? Trust Camillus to go the extra for us Formites! Thanks Will.

Kudos for taking the risk on producing the 154CM EDC for us, we are not representative of the knife buying public as a whole and its easy to forget that at times. We must be 1% or 2% of the market, if that. It is really nice you go out of you way on projects like this for us! I bought 2 of the 154CM EDC models! I was thinking of getting 2 more, now I know what I will do... When I get that high paid job! Two of those!

Cheers!
