Annoying problem with 500-series lockbacks

I have wanted to buy a 505 (Knight) for a long time. Every one I see in person has a lock bar that sinks well into the handle when closed. It all lines up in the opened position. The 501 has the same problem, but oddly enough the 503 (which I have bought more than one of over many years) seems OK.

I am also thrilled to see the new 55, which can only be described as long overdue, but I am afraid to order any small Buck lockbacks without seeing them first.

Has anyone else seen this problem with a recent 501 or 505?

I just looked at all 6 of my 501's. One even dates to the early 80's and each one dips just slightly at the front when closed. I dont know why. I do know that sometimes a flaw like that becomes part of the character of the knife. The 425's made a change a few years ago and the blade no longer lines up with the back spring. Odd...

The lock bar on my Buck 500< (Duke) dips about 0.2 mm at the front end and stands proud about the same at the rear. When open, all is flush.

My BuckLite 442 does the same, but the dip is greater...about 0.8 mm.

My 110 is dead flush ...open or closed.

My only other lockback, an A.G. Russel, is also flush, but it cost me more than all the one's above added together.

I love them all equally! :)

I have a 110 in for a new blade and the lockbar on it was flush open or closed. I also have the new 55 and it also is flush front and rear whether open or closed. Just in case you're thinking of getting the 55, it's great. A small version of the 110 that has great snap opening and closing and came to me "scary sharp". Don't be afraid to pick one up.

I haven't handled a new one lately, but the two 501s that I have (micarta version from the 70s and a Master Series BG-42) are nice and flush both open and closed.
