Anodizing titanium liners and 98 Commanders

Hello all,

I've got a few questions. My first new folder was a nice CQC-7B that I got about 2 years ago. I carried it quite a lot, till I got a small, very light spyderco. I then started collecting a few Perrin knives...and now have come full circle back to Emersons.

I was reading about anodizing titanium, and wondered if anyone had ever done that with the liners on their Emersons. And if so, to what success.

Also, all this talk of 98 Commanders has me wondering...was that the first year they were made? How much has changed between then and now? I haven't found any reviews on the differences of the model years. I believe a friend of mine has a 98...wonder if I could get her to sell it to me...hmm

Anyhow, thanks,

Ted

Hi!

I haven't tried out the anodizing, but i have thermally colored the liners of my -98.

Do a search on the -98 vs. the new verisions of the commander, it has been covered a lot.
Include Mr. Commander aka Mr. Hollister aka Mr. Hollinger...

Oh, your lady friend, please tell her to gimme a call at 1-800-imsingle ;)

Jonas,

That tutorial looks interesting. Maybe I'll just try to do it thermally. I also read about doing it with 9V batteries.

I searched on Commanders, but I must have missed the comparison posts. I'll have to try it again.

I'm trying to find some more work to substitute my day job. My wife is dying for a pair of nice leather boots. They are about $300...so we worked a deal that I could get a nice custom knife if she can get the boots. Then she saw the Terzuola I wanted, and the $600 price tag...I'm found out. I need some mulla, because those mini Commanders are pretty sweet as well. Too many knives, too little green.

Thanks for the help,

Ted

Thanks for all the great ideas guys. 12V batteries sounds like a lot. I read you can get shades of blue out of 4 9V's put together....maybe its the length of time that the Ti is under current? I would have never thought of using Coke to do it...that stuff is wicked, will rot your teeth!

Thanks again, I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend ;)

This subject comes up fairly often:

The '98 Commanaders were the First Generation. (point of reference only)

In mid 1999 EKI made several changes to the Commander line:

  • *Thinned the liners a hair
    *Thinner the scales
*Added a second detent to the non-lock liner side
*Changed to point grind to keep more blade thickness out toward the point
*Changed from water cutting the blades to laser cutting
*Serrated the liners (traction grooves) behind the thumb ramp

In late 2000, the blade grind seems to have gone back to the original style.

Most of the changes have been well recieved. However, the overall thinning of the body has met with some . . . grumbling. I too prefer the thicker feel of the First Generation Commanders and would like to see the "widened". ("Wider is better!") I would be willing to put money down that the change was made in the first place to satify customer requests.

John,

Thanks for the history. I hadn't been too keen on bigger knives...not until recently. I guess its because I live on the coast now, and its getting colder. Hard to carry a big knife in shorts and a tshirt.

How the heck do you all afford these things?!?! There are seriously like 20 knives I want now, all of them are dancing around in my head...no money though.

I will anodize your emerson liners for $15 plus $4 return shipping. I can get good blues, purples, and golds.

p.s. I anodized my edc cqc7 wave purple about 6 months ago and still looks good.

David,

I think I'll have to be sending my liners your way shortly. I gave the whole thing a half-arsed try this weekend...nothing really happened. That's probably a good thing, considering most people would think I have no business messing with electrical equipment.

Seeing as I've taken to carry my Emerson everyday recently...I think I'll have to wait till I get another one first though ;) don't want to be without. I've been eyeing the mini commanders....

Thanks,

Ted
