Well, I didn't want to hijack the other guys opinel thread. But then again, maybe I shouldn't be cluttering up the board with redundant posts? Oh well...

Anyways, I finally got ahold of a couple of Opinels for the first time. I have to say, I love how simple they are! And the thin blades get wicked sharp so easily. Not sure how long the edge will last, but if it's that easy to get it sharp, I don't mind sharpening it everytime I use it.

I got a #6 and a #8. The 8 is an ideal size, but a little big for pocket carry in my opinion. The 6 on the other hand is perfect. With the 6 and a couple of knives I inherited, it looks like my Case texas jack is going to have to start sharing pocket time.

Well, me being the kind of person who just can't leave a good thing be, I went and putzed around with the #8s handle. So I took it apart, changed the shape to something that's a little more aesthetically appealing to me, and added a little bit of carving. I'm no carver so it looks like a cave man did it, but I like it. Design is an element off a Rune stone that I modified to fit the handle.
I also refinished it with a wood finish I make. It has pine tar in it, so it gives it a nice dark color that I quite like. It's now hanging out in my backpack (i.e. man purse  )

That carving looks really neat, nice job. The one optimal I had was just sanded an stained :). Although the poi all is no doubt a great functional tool, it wasn't for me. I eventually gifted it to my brother and he carries it daily. He has got a wicked patina on his as he uses it mostly for food prep. My brother isn't a huge knife Knut and isn't big on knife cleaning but he gets a lot of use out of it :)

My #10 rides as back up in my sling pack. Always near at hand.

As for it being a man purse...

The carving looks great, btw!:thumbup:

My wife bought me a "man bag" because I never have room for all the stuff I like to carry when woods walking, travelling etc. I swear I've never seen that cartoon, but the other day I told her that's what I'd say to anyone that wanted to jab me about my new bag. :D

I need to get a Opinel for it.

That carving looks great. Looks like a fun project... I need to order one and give it a try.

Regarding the man purse thing.... I've tried defending mine by saying, "Well, if it was good enough for Nessmuk, it's good enough for me", but the reference is clearly lost on most people.

But then, note the handle of the Nessmuk knife sticking out of his man purse!

I guess I could call it my "tactical go-bag" but then I'd be just like "Deputy Bob" on Justified. That would be too sad to contemplate.

Well I carry a gun in it, lol. Best man purse comic ever.

I've found a backpack or brief case seems to be the best way to get away with a "man purse". The key is not to carry it everywhere like a purse though. It generally stays in the car, or sits on the shelf at work. Kinda like a purse/lunchbox/FAK/toy box.
