Well, I didn't want to hijack the other guys opinel thread. But then again, maybe I shouldn't be cluttering up the board with redundant posts? Oh well...
Anyways, I finally got ahold of a couple of Opinels for the first time. I have to say, I love how simple they are! And the thin blades get wicked sharp so easily. Not sure how long the edge will last, but if it's that easy to get it sharp, I don't mind sharpening it everytime I use it.
I got a #6 and a #8. The 8 is an ideal size, but a little big for pocket carry in my opinion. The 6 on the other hand is perfect. With the 6 and a couple of knives I inherited, it looks like my Case texas jack is going to have to start sharing pocket time.
Well, me being the kind of person who just can't leave a good thing be, I went and putzed around with the #8s handle. So I took it apart, changed the shape to something that's a little more aesthetically appealing to me, and added a little bit of carving. I'm no carver so it looks like a cave man did it, but I like it. Design is an element off a Rune stone that I modified to fit the handle.
I also refinished it with a wood finish I make. It has pine tar in it, so it gives it a nice dark color that I quite like. It's now hanging out in my backpack (i.e. man purse
