Another good day on the Trinity river near Crockett Tx with Catching Dinosaurs Guide Service. Almost a half dozen gar caught and one just a hair under 6 foot. I only do catch and release and all my gar are released unharmed after a few pictures, i support a sustainable fishery for future generations.
the gear used was
A Fin Nor Offshore 6500 spooled with 100 pound Suffix performance braid on a 6 foot 6 inch Shimano Trevala rated for 50-100 braid. The bait used was cut carp in about half pound chunks on bottom in the bends in the river.

They outlawed snares here in Cali for landing sturgeon. The biologists say internal injuries can be inflicted and females reproductive organs can be crushed and damaged causing the eggs to be absorbed leaving the fish barren for life. Can't say it's true or not just a thought. Nice fish btw.

Big difference in the scales on a gar vs a sturgeon. Alligator gar have EXTREMELY tough hides on them.
