Another $7 EDC - Eddie Bauer from Target

I picked up a small Eddie Bauer knife at Target the other day, about $7. It looks like a minitaure Spyderco, maybe endura styled except with a thumb stud, and it has a LED light in the handle. Semi serrated blade is just under 2" long and claims to be made out of 440C! Made in Taiwan. A larger knife (made in China) was also available for $10 with a 3" long 440C blade!

The led light in the handle makes it a little fat, but I think it gives the knife a better grip, more filling. Lockback, the blade opens easily and has no noticeable play. Razor sharp out of the box.

So far a nice little knife for the money. I just finished making about 20 - 10" cuts through some carpeting with no real decrease in observed cutting ability.

Good stuff so far, and should be quite sheeple friendly.

Thanks for the report

440C used to be a premium steel before the current more exotic alloys - so that's indeed very good value.

Is the LED light Red or white beam?

Smaller LED lights tend to be Red - as it can run on just under 3V - which is a single button cell.

Red is the correct and only color that can preserve true Scotopic human night vision (whereas green or blue-green is really for compatibility with night vision Equipment).

Target has a no fuss return policy, and Eddie Bauer has a fine reputation.

Please let us know how you get on with this little knife.

I've got one of these knife/lights and the LED is red, unfortunately. But the knife itself is great. It's got a point sharp enough that will remove splinters and the blade is sturdy and easy to sharpen. The serrations aren't big and bumpy like many serrations, but they're more like the kind found on Cold Steel blades, but a bit more robust. I don't expect the steel is anything to write home about, but I think just about anyone would be happy with the knife. It really is a sleeper and one I can heartily recommend. I would, however, get a small pouch to keep the light from being accidentally turned on and off while in one's pocket.

That's right, the light is red. It really is a nice little knife. The blade is pointy and like a little scalpel. It is my "I can take it to work and it won't scare my coworkers" knife.

I'd be interested in hearing how it holds up for you long term as my knife seems quite sturdy. And the serrations I like, too. If it had a white LED it would be perfect. Red LEDs, while retaining night vision, are lousy at throwing light, lousy for map reading (red lines disappear) and don't show detail.

I tried finding a picture of one, but I reckon Target is the only place you can get them.

About a year ago, Eddie Bauer had a very slim knife with a butt-ugly 3-inch 440C blade with titanium coating (also available at Target). Despite the crooked downward thrusting top of the blade, it became my brother's EDC and he opened countless cardboard boxes and slashed through many plastic bubbles. And he used it for well over a year, when I gave him a Cold Steel Pro-Lite tanto. Now he carries both knives!

At least I know when I give him a knife that he's going to use the datgum thing! --Confed
