Do we know who the axe head maker US92 is? I picked up an old axe on a garage sale for $1 that has a DB US92 head. The handles appears original and has an aluminum wedge rather then wood, I assume that helps date it. The handles says "Woodings" and perhaps "& brother", not sure and can't make out much more.

We determined the M heads to Collins by team sleuthing, perhaps and figure out the US92 (if not already known)

For another buck got a nice old ball pien hammer with nice wooden handle. and for dollar #3 a " chopper 1 " splitting maul with those goofy flipper things, with broken handle.

Woodings-Verona, 1992 year of manufacture.
You had a good day for bargains.

I have an identical axe...and mine says "US95" ...

that is what the text on my handle looks like. Are these good heads? anyone put one in vinegar to check the temper? The one I got has a usable handle so I don't want to do it yet.

I don't know about the brand or anything, but I wanted to check the heat treat line on a Council axe without soaking the wood in vinegar. I just laid the axe flat and laid a vinegar soaked rag over the head. It worked well enough to reveal the heat treat line. Sounds like some good scores at the flea market!

Woodings-Verona was based in Pennsylvania, but I couldn't find any references to them actually making axes there. Their axe factory seemed to be in Falls City, Nebraska. It was sold to Ames (True Temper) in 1997. I suppose that any modern True Temper axe that says "Made in USA" was made in the old Woodings-Verona facility in Falls City, NE.

"...January 16, 1997...Ames garden tool company has purchased the assets of Woodings-Verona Tool Works, Inc...
...Woodings-Verona, a privately-held company based in Verona, Pennsylvania, manufactures hot-forged heavy striking tools including sledge hammers, axes, bars, picks and railroad tools. The company has been in operation for 120 years and is a leader in its industry....Woodings-Verona has manufacturing facilities in Falls City, Nebraska, and Columbiana, Ohio..."
