ANOTHER backpack thread

I've long been searching for the perfect bag. I have a few backpacks, a duffel or two, and a camelback, but I still am looking for the perfect bag. It could be a messenger bag or a backpack, whichever would work. It would be mostly for carrying knives, books, average day-to-day gear, etc. I'd like to be able to take it to spend the night somewhere as well, so I need room for clothes and overnight stuff. I really like the Timbukto (sp?) bags, but they don't have any inside pockets for small gear and that is a must. I also really, really like the Hydrastorm Ripper but I don't really need the hydration pack and it would take up needed room. Also the price is kind of high. Okay actually really high. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

And yes, I've checked the other bag threads and I thought if I was more specific then I'd get some good help.

What about accessorizing a Timbuk2 with stuff sacks?

Also, you can customize a Timbuk2 bag in various ways. Check out their website.

I am moving toward a two bag system. A Porkchop with my daily stuff, EDC, and an El Ocho with my other stuff in it.

I have searched high and low for a good kit container, and after looking at everything I could find, I have settled on Timbuk2.

I've long been searching for the perfect bag

It doesn't exist. I've looked all my life and haven't seemed to find "it" It's like the search for the Holy Grail. Some times you come close but there is always someting that makes you keep looking. It's a bag sickness, that's what I have...I come to the conclusion that one must own many bags to choose from depending on the requirement or environment.

Sidewinder,
You have hit the nail on the head, the perfect bag does not exist! There always seems to just one thing you want different or changed.
My wife calls me "Container Boy" (among other things we wont talk about) because of my desire to organize and compartmentalize my gear; the product of a Gunnery Sergeant father who believed in, "a place for everything and everything in its place", the apple has not fallen far from the tree.

Seems we share many common traits on this forum, (obsessions over watches, pens, knives, guns, tac-gear), just wondering how many of you all out there admit to being organized to a fault, and suffer the ridicule of the unorganized?

BTW, although I have dozens of bags to haul my "stuff" around in over my 17 years in the Corps, day to day, my green helmet bag always seems to be what I end up carrying my stuff in.

Tuna out.

Tuna -- oh man, did my wife like that :) I showed her your post and she just pointed at me and started laughing. You so described me, and the rest of us I imagine, dead on :D I admit it - I am an organizemycoolguystuffaholic - but I can quit anytime I want to, I just don't ever see myself wanting that ;)

Have fun!

It's a fact. . .there are no "perfect" packs ! There is a reason they fall just short of making the "perfect" pack. . .$ $ $ !

Being a GI and travelling all over the world ~ I think that I've tried just about every kind of pack out there. . .from external frame to internal frame, RUCK's, butt-packs, canvas flight bags, ALICE packs (LC-1, LC-2, etc. . .), day packs, 2 day packs, 3 day packs, assult packs, recon packs, rescue packs, etc. From off-shelf purchase to government issue.

Take a look at one of the following. . . Jansport Equinox 33 Pack, Jansport Nebula Daypack, Kelty Whitney 1900 Pack, or a Kelty Blanca 2000 Technical Day Pack (very very nice !).

Amphibious Tuna comments about continually going back to the nylon green helmet back. It's a fact ! I have several, in green and black, and they hold a ton of stuff ! Kinda funny. . .I'm currently designing one with 4 & 8 external pockets and 4 internal pockets (not including the main internal) pouch. I also want to incorporate a shoulder type strap system that I've designed.

Will see what happens. . .
