Here is another project just waiting to get messed up:D 11.5 x 1/4+ thick W2 blade with what will hopefully be a 1018 S-guard and ferrule. I haven't decided on the wood yet. Already heat treated (I hope...lol) Just test fitting the hardware.

So thats where you've been hiding my bowie..and W2 just like I asked;). Looks good man. What woods do you have in mind?

well, i have a lot....:D I have a block of presentation grade ironwood that I have been sitting on for over a year. Also have a lot of really nice curly maple and english walnut. Add cocobolo, lignum vitae, ebony, African blackwood, snakewood (not great figure), and a big stick of amboyna burl. Depending on the handle stye, I could also go with my smaller sticks of olivewood, tuilipwood and old growth Brazilian Rosewood. I am almost afraid to use the DI because that is a one shot deal, whereas with the amboyna i have a stick that is 2 x2 x18 or so. The guard and ferrule are probably going to be blued or browned, so I have to factor that in. I would also perhaps prefer to use a pretty heavy wood like ironwood, lignum or ebony to move he balance point back a tad farther. All of this assumes that it will turn out presentable and it will cut......lol.

I dont see many knives with lignum Vitae on it. I like the wood myself, very dense stuff. Do the pieces of that have a lot of character? Ebony is a nice wood and I could definatley see it on their. Pending what color you do the gaurd and ferrule in, those 2 including the Ironwood seem like great choices. I like burl but have found it too be a little light handled on bigger knives and like it on hunters myself(just me). I am sure it'll look great however you do it. Is this a customers order or a project of yours?

All of mine at this point are just done to improve the skills.....lol. I have one project for a customer in the works.....My first comission

Well congratulations, let me know when you start doing work, I am a huge fan of large bowies and I order many of them. If you feel like doing another like that just let me know, I like colored gaurds. just contact me:thumbup: :D

If it ends up presentable and it cuts, I'll let you know. If it merits one, I will get a Kenny Rowe sheath for it.

if it is darker, you could always go with a piece of African blackwood with heart showing... I have seen it when it gets closer to the center that it gets a bit of brown/ tan streaks... it is also kinda neat when you mount it against the grain, you need a much bigger piece, but the end results with the grain look really cool (kinda like snake wood, but much darker (grey like)).

my two cents

My one experience with blackwood was on a fighter that I made for myself. It had the streaks of brown like you said. But after being exposed to air for a time and finished, it went much darker like lignum vitae does. Lignum sawdust is kinda yellowish when fresh, but the wood darkens a few shades after a couple of days. The blackwood went from very, very dark brown with chocolate streaks to totally black after about a week in thr air and sanding and oiling..
