although i have been field dressing big game for 50+ years, i have never used (or observed in use) a "gut hook", such as the Buck Zipper (0191BRG-B).

mindful of the teasing/abuse i may incur, i would appreciate a brief outline of the technique (my guess is that, for example, following a small incision just south of the breast bone, one reverses the knife, inserts the hook into the incision and uses the hook to open the animal from stem to stern, without inadvertently piercing the stomach etc.) thank you.

Im in the same boat, never used a guthook. My nephews use em and I have seen them work. Just pull upward on the skin. The Zipper was named the Quest but in the initial real world field test, the guthook didnt perform.

I personally dont like the look of guthook knives:barf: And even though they seem to work very well, I dont use em just cause I'm stubborn and old fashioned.:grumpy:

Yes, thats how they are used . I have used many different types and they worked fine . I've even made some on knives . Get one and use it to see if you'll like it . DM
