Another Beginner

Hi,
Like the fellow in the above post I'm just starting with throwing knives. I found a good article in TK a few issues back and have taken to practicing with my Gerber and a U.S. Air Force survival knife. My question is would a dart board sans that stupid little metal grid they put over them make a functional target/backstop?
