Another Belt Sander Question

Not long ago I ordered the Delta SA180(1/3hp) 1x42 belt sander, but it's been slow to ship and I'm rethinking the purchase. I do want a 1x42. I'm interested in trying to make a knife or two, but mostly it'd be for sharpening and general home shop use. Grizzly also makes a model G1013 1x42 which has a bit more powerful motor (1/2hp). Does anyone have an opinion on whether there's any real advantage in purchasing one model over the other?

Thanks, TinyDee. But the Burr King's more of an investment than I'm ready to make at the moment!

sffar,
I think you will be just as happy with the 1/3rd hp motor as you will be with the 1/2hp motor.

They are both going to be underpowered for knifemaking, but they should both work fine for sharpening as you don't really need much pressure for sharpening.

I would give it a try and if you decide you want to make knives, get a knifemaker grinder later.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Thanks for the advice. I have Goddard's $50 Knife Shop book, and he mentions the 1/2hp motor as being pretty good on a 1x42 belt, but like you all he recommends the 2x72 grinder as being just the thing for most knife making. The Delta and the smaller Grizzly, besides the slight difference in power, seem very similar. As far as I can tell there's no accomodation for different wheels or anything on either of them. As for differences in quality, flexibilty in use and such I have no idea. Both seem like they'd be pretty good for sharpening and smaller projects where space is limited and so's the budget.

can you name a knife grinder or give links to one.....

There are several grinders made that are geared towards the knifemaker.

There is the K.M.G, the Bader, and by far the best in my opinion the Dozier Grinder. I am sure I have missed some, but they are all basically like these.

The Dozier IS hands down the most versital grinder on the market in my opinion. Its not cheap, but you for sure get what you pay for. I have used mine day in and day out for something like 9 years and it is still going strong!

I really think you will like your little grinder, just don't expect it to do the work of a bigger grinder and it will work really nicely for you!

You should also be able to do some handle mods pretty well with it.

Great! Thanks, Tom, for the insights. Sounds like the Delta will do just fine. Now I wish they'd just hurry up and ship the darn thing!
