Another BF acquisition reminds me of my grandad, who introduced me to pocket knives

This Camillus equal end was one of three knives that arrived today from Vanguard41xx. Since Monday is my day off I was able to spend time this afternoon cleaning and oiling them. This one required more attention than the others, but it was worth it to spend time with such a fine old piece of craftsmanship. Honestly, it was this one that first caught my eye in his sale listing, and the more I worked with it today the more I realized why.

This color and pattern of bone seems vaguely familiar to me. I am almost certain I recall my grandad carrying a knife that looked like this. I could of course be mistaken, after all he died far too soon (at age 60) forty years ago this fall, and I was a boy of single digit age when we used to spend our afternoons together.

My parents are flying down from Indiana tomorrow for a visit, and I will ask my dad if he remembers his dad carrying a knife that looked like this. He may not, and my 50 year mind may have more cobwebs than it ought where memories of days spent with my grandad are stored. Nonetheless, I will treasure this one as a reminder of a simple, hard working man who always had a knife in his pocket (nothing fancy, mind you) to handle all those daily tasks for which a man needs a knife.

Hi Doug!

Really a great piece of craftmanship. Also a nice story. I´m sure you can enjoy that knife very much. Especially because it reminds you to your grandpa.

Kind regards
Andi

Good looking knife, Doug! I too have memories of my Grandpa's pocket knife. Only memories though, I'm afraid.

I don't know much about Camillus dating. How old is your knife?

That looks very much like my first pocketknife. Acquired at the local flea market, it rests somewhere in the woods behind the house where I grew up.

That knife caught my eye on the listing as well. It is absolutely gorgeous. Great pictures. Now he has a fancy one! Your grandad has a smile in his heart right now. Carry it with a smile in yours.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. Rick, I have no idea about the date. I'll have to ask around, and maybe someone who knows about such things can answer. Sorry to hear about your lost knife Corey. I have many from my childhood that have disappeared over the years. Sure wish I had some of them back.

I showed it to Dad last night. His reply was, "I don't remember seeing a knife like that, but I can't remember what his knives looked like."

"Knives," he said.

As in plural.

So, maybe I am genetically predisposed to this madness!

Great story. I remember my grandfather carrying a Schrade 80t most of the time when I was younger. I remember sitting in the swing with him eating apples he was cutting up. I do have his Case stockman and Ulster scout knife but I don't know what ever happened to his old Schrade. I have been trying to find one like it but not having much luck.

That is it. Man, that thing brings back some memories. My grandfather is the reason I got into knives. He said a man should always have a knife on him and gave me my first knife, an Uncle Henry jack, which I still have.

I probably should have explained in my original post why I used the word "another" in the title.

Here is the story about a recent trade that also brought me a knife that is tied to my grandad.
