Here is another knife I recently finished made from a large farrier's rasp. The blade is 14" long, the OAL is a bit over 19". I forged the blade shape. The blade was heated and peanut oil quenched three times, then differentially tempered using a hand torch. The handle is cocobolo, the guard and buttplate are mild steel. There are leather spacers at each end of the handle.

rasp/file bladed knives make such a cool pattern. I need to find some good rasps to grind out a knife or two. I have some files that I will eventually make into a couple of knives.

Forging to shape really made that one look cool. You really got a great sweep out of that one, and the handle shape looks great for a chopper or people sticker.

You know, I would bet that the predecessors to the first Bowie knife in early America looked exactly like that right there.....made by local blacksmiths from what they had available....old files and rasps, with no frills and ready to tackle the frontier. Nice job.
