Last week I received a package in the mail from Paul Hilborn. It included a coin and a nice note in which Paul stated he had included a couple of knives that deserved a new home and he thought I might like them! Man, was Paul ever right! :D

One of the knives is an 85 teardrop jack with buffalo horn handles. It also has a couple of modifications that Paul made: one of his "world-famous" EO notches, and reprofiling the secondary blade to a coping blade. I don't know how many times I've (somewhat enviously :() admired the 2-bladed EO 85s that folks have posted here, and to have one of my own is unbelievable! Furthermore, ever since I picked up a knife with bull horn handles in Spain back in January, I've been enamored with horn handles of various kinds. Lately, there have been at least a couple of threads here related to buffalo horn knives, and I've drooled over some of those photos! So this knife Paul so generously sent me is essentially a dream come true, and the personal mods by Paul make it even better!! Here are some photos that don't really do this splendid knife justice:

Paul also sent me another 2-balded jackknife that I've been trying to do some homework on, and I've seen it called a teardrop jack, a dogleg jack, and a torpedo jack. It's a Winchester model 2857 that I think is one of the "black box Winchesters" I've seen referenced a couple of times (e.g. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/562111-quot-Black-Box-quot-Winchesters). Paul said the knife was made for Blue Grass Cutlery and called the bone "Utica bone." I just call the bone FANTASTIC!! I told Paul that when the knives first arrived, I spent the afternoon with a pen in one hand as I graded final exams and the Winchester in the other hand, just feeling the richness of the bone. Again, I hope my pictures can give some sense of the incredible jigging of this knife:

Paul often talks about the LEGENDARY generosity in the traditional subforum, and he certainly embodies it!! Sincere thanks, Paul!:thumbup::)

That Paul Hilborn is a Prince among men! I've been blessed with his kindness before and I can say without a doubt he's a true Gentleman

Wow the generosity here! That is a fantastic looking knife, I have recently fallen under the 85's spell very unexpectedly. Thanks for posting these.

Paul rocks!!! Glad they went to a fine gent, GT!! Both knives have that special something. Well done to both of you:thumbup::thumbup:

Wow! Very nice gesture Paul! Gary, you're a very lucky recipient of a couple of fantastic knives. The 85's are a great pattern and you will soon grow to love it. The Winchester Black Box knives are also very well made. I know they called it a teardrop, which it is, but it's a combination teardrop/dogleg which in my opinion makes it doubly nice as I like both patterns. Enjoy them brother.

Great of you Paul, love both of those knives and I share your same sentiment about the EO 85's. Both seem like a fraternal pair of twins~

Gary, you are very welcome and I'm glad you like them:cool::thumbup:

Generosity is a contagious thing in these here parts and I have been a multiple multiple recipient:o:eek:

Now if memory serves, this all started with our very own Mark (Markesharp):D

Dang fine if you Paul! I've seen and heard nothing but good things about you and your kindness/generosity:) it sure is refreshing to be around kind hearted people!!! Any way, Gary very nice knives sir! Those 85's have been growing on me too. I've never handled one but I will:D:D;)

I was wondering how this was going to play out. Now I know. Outstanding generosity Paul. You and Mark personify what makes this place so great.

Congratulations GT. I know how you feel having been on the receiving end of Paul's generosity.
