Last week I received a package in the mail from Paul Hilborn. It included a coin and a nice note in which Paul stated he had included a couple of knives that deserved a new home and he thought I might like them!
Man, was Paul ever right!
One of the knives is an 85 teardrop jack with buffalo horn handles. It also has a couple of modifications that Paul made: one of his "world-famous" EO notches, and reprofiling the secondary blade to a coping blade. I don't know how many times I've (somewhat enviously
) admired the 2-bladed EO 85s that folks have posted here, and to have one of my own is unbelievable! Furthermore, ever since I picked up a knife with bull horn handles in Spain back in January, I've been enamored with horn handles of various kinds. Lately, there have been at least a couple of threads here related to buffalo horn knives, and I've drooled over some of those photos! So this knife Paul so generously sent me is essentially a dream come true, and the personal mods by Paul make it even better!! Here are some photos that don't really do this splendid knife justice:
Paul also sent me another 2-balded jackknife that I've been trying to do some homework on, and I've seen it called a teardrop jack, a dogleg jack, and a torpedo jack. It's a Winchester model 2857 that I think is one of the "black box Winchesters" I've seen referenced a couple of times (e.g. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/562111-quot-Black-Box-quot-Winchesters). Paul said the knife was made for Blue Grass Cutlery and called the bone "Utica bone." I just call the bone FANTASTIC!! I told Paul that when the knives first arrived, I spent the afternoon with a pen in one hand as I graded final exams and the Winchester in the other hand, just feeling the richness of the bone. Again, I hope my pictures can give some sense of the incredible jigging of this knife:
Paul often talks about the LEGENDARY generosity in the traditional subforum, and he certainly embodies it!! Sincere thanks, Paul!:thumbup:
