I have just been informed that for 2002, KABAR has switched blade steel for their Next Generation series from Sandvik 12C27 to 440A.

Probably a good move. 440A, in heats showing the higher ranges of carbon and chromium, can be an excellent blade steel alloy.

Kabar has used 12c27 for some years now, so why the switch to 440a? Is it better quality, or lower price, or availability, or what? It would be interesting to know.
