When I posted my 152OT research back in September of 2005, I had not yet been able to discern just when this style box was used.

Did it preceed the "Sharp Idea" box, or was it the later design with the "Sharp Idea" box being first?

Logic says that logos and slogans were added as time went by. Well, sometimes logic works, sometimes not.

"Reading the knife" didn't yield much information except that it had a later tang stamping. The blade is the usual plain grind, not the later hollow grind. It is also 1095HC carbon steel, not stainless. The change to stainless was approved as of July of 2001. So the assemblage is pre-July 2001.

"Reading the sheath" did not yield as much. It is the typical standard light russett sheath with handle retainer strap and small plain snap.

"Reading the Insert" proved much more productive. It is the #7007180709:

PRF (my own code) is the product registration form. The insert features the "flat flag/MADE IN THE U.S.A." logo on the front. I first see this circa 1998 and..voila! this sheet is copyrighted 1998. It also has the message from Wally, President of ISC. We know this postdates 1986 at least.

"Reading the Box" brought a slight surprise. Slogan "Proudly Made In The U.S.A." is seen on the front. I date this slogan use to circa 1988 (first use). The back side of the box had the surprise.

It has the "KNIVES AND TOOLS" added below the block logo. This one (with the text) dates to circa 1999.

So we can say with the authority of evidence that this style Old Timer box was in use circa 1998-2001. As you may remember, the boxes changed to the blue striped design in mid-2001.

I am sure that this is not the last word on this subject, and we will continue to find variations and exceptions, but this is as close as we have gotten so far.

Interesting. I had always thought the plain box was first, the "sharp idea" banner added later.

Here's a box that's always missing from these posts:

Aw, that's an easy one! My 296Y came in that box and they were only catalogued from 1992 thru 1998.

The Built To Last A Lifetime slogan first appeared circa 1990 in the catalogs.

Here is a 296Y-O in that box

These (SMKW SFO?) must have come near the end of the 296Y production. Note the insert paper:

Not only the website but the copyright date.

I don't know how often the Old Timers were packaged in those black and red boxes, but I only have one. And the OT label is a factory sticker on the end of the box. So perhaps they only used those for emergencies when the regular OT boxes were unavailable?

Anyone have a black/red with the OTmodel # actually printed on the box?
