Thanks to all you posters who've contributed your knowledge to this forum. Learning from you has really increased the pleasure of messing around with sharp things for me.

I've read some of the discussions about Schrade boxes, and think I understand some of the basics on their approximate dates. Does anyone know if the barcodes (or the numbers beneath the code) on the more modern boxes can be interpreted for date of manufacture?

Since there's no guarantee that the knife you might buy (such as from ebay) actually came in the box that the seller is providing, the best indication of knife vintage is the Tang stamp.

Old Timer Schrade Cutlery Tang Markings
Schrade Cutlery Co. - 1904 to 1946
Schrade Walden NY USA - 1946 to 1974
Schrade NY USA - 1974 to 2004
The Schrade-Walden tang stamping has been resurrected a few times in recent years, on special issue knives.
