As some may recall, in the "What Traditional Knife Are You Totin" and "Newest Addition - Traditionals Of Course" threads, on 09-04, I stated I was going to try to carry my won on 09-02, GEC Tideoute 828318 Dixie Stockman, which arrived on 09-04, my GEC Northfield UN-X-LD 85-2211 Harness Jack, a circa 1945-1948 Imperial Engineer's Knife, and a 1979-1980 four pin Old Timer 7OT, "For the rest of the month".
The 7OT was swapped out for a C&C Buck 110 SFO with Oak covers and a 5160 blade, on 09-12, that a very generous member who wants to be anonymous, sent me.
While there is/was nothing wrong with the 7OT, and it performed admirably for the tasks I used it for ... you know how it is: When you get a new knife you just gotta carry it. Carrying both the 7OT and the 110 didn't make much sense. Besides, I've carried that 7OT "long term" several times before.
Anyway, Since 09-12 this has been my carry.View attachment 1644314
So far, no issues. (Golly! ... what a shock! (sarcasim, guys, scarasim))
The 82838 Dixie Stockman has started to get a patina from use. Not enough to show up in a photo yet, but it's there.
I decided not to force a patina on this knife. (Ditto the 5160 Buck 110).
Admittidly, my knife useage thus far has been light; Cut whatever we were having for Lunch/Supper, (mainly just cut off the stale crust on sandwiches, and cut the fruit chunks small enough to eat in two "normal" size bites, rather than one big bite), trim a couple small under an inch branches, open a bill in the mail, etc.
At any rate the urge to change what is in my pocket (the 2 GEC's) and/or the Engineer's knife clipped to my key ring, hasn't hit like it usually does when I try to carry a fancy, rare, expensive, and irreplaceable knife (like a GEC, for example), let alone two or more of them. (The Imperial is somewhat rare, I think. The carbon steel 110 isn't available any more, either, come to that.)
Seeing all the recent pictures of the 2018 Forum Knife has made it somewhat tempting put mine in my pocket, and put up the 828318. However, I still want my carry to be carbon steel; not stail less, so I have been able to fight that temptation. The Forum knife may well be (or not) the stockman I carry after I put these away. I even have a nice SK Blades Buck 110 SFO with the same blade steel.
... no matching steel Scout/Camp knife, tho.
I doubt I'll have any "the ___ didn't work for the task" or "the __ broke while I was using it" updates.
A bunch of "yeah ... the ___ did the task at hand ..." updates gets boring.
By the way: Why wouldn't a sharp knife do a knife task, presuming you ain't attempting to peel a critter with a Sheepsfoot, Lamsfoot or Wharncliffe blade, which isn't intended for that particular task?
Anyhow, I think I'm going to extend at least the 110's carry to 10-12. I might swap out the other three on 10-04. Time and "What can I do today?" bordom will tell.
