Coroner Discussing Gun Safety Shoots Self

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Monroe County Coroner David Toumey was hospitalized with a leg wound after accidentally shooting himself while trying to demonstrate gun safety.

Toumey told The Herald-Times for a story published Saturday that he was demonstrating gun safety to some people at a Lake Monroe boat ramp about 11 p.m. Wednesday when he accidentally shot himself.

He said that as he checked to make sure his weapon was unloaded, the gun discharged, and a bullet struck him in his left leg.

``It's an unfortunate accident,'' Toumey said. ``I've always been very, very safe.''

He was taken to Bloomington Hospital and later transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Toumey said he was scheduled to have surgery Saturday and expects to be in the hospital from three to five days.

Monroe County Sheriff Steve Sharp said he was unable to release details of the shooting because the report had yet to be filed by the deputy assigned to the case

Didn't the last one shoot himself in the head? If that's what he did, I guess this guy is a little higher up on the pyramid of instructors who mess up and shoot themselves.

I had a Hunter Safety instructor that shot himself in the leg with a .357 mag. Aww well, it happens to the best of us.

That sounds like the terrorist suicide belt demonstration:

"Watch closely. I'm only going to show you this once."

Probably conducting the classic, "there's still a round in the chamber," demonstration.

It seems like two or three "expert instructors" shoot themselves each year that way. When will these people learn to use snap caps?

"He said that as he checked to make sure his weapon was unloaded, the gun discharged, and a bullet struck him in his left leg. "

That's probably because he used the "cartridge unloading lever" located in that metal loop thingy attached to the handle.

This was also posted at GlockTalk, and I'll post my same comments here...

Since the guy who shot himself was/is the Coroner, if he would have killed himself with that shot, should he have pronounced himself dead, and signed his own death certificate?...Or would that have been a conflict of interest?.:D.:D.

I think there's a rumor that wolffman shot himself in the leg from 300 yards away with a high powered rifle while flirting with two elderly ladies...
