Another Comparison Cherokee Special vs Foxy Folly

I asked for some opinions in another thread about the Foxy Folly but the other blade that I really would like to have is the Cherokee Special. How would these 2 compare. Ysva, I know how much you like the FF but since you designed the CS how are they alike or different. I really think that I prefer the CS with the exception of the Yin Yang inlay. Is one more weapon, one a better chopper, one possibly better for survival (possibly do some skinning). I don't recall the weights on the YCS.

Cuch the Foxy Folly is more what I was after when I designed the YCS with the exception of the two special kardas and the awl.
The YCS was designed to be all that anyone would need in the woods for survival or deer hunting.
Equipped with a couple of well made kardas and a three cornered sharp pointed awl;) I prefer the Foxy Folly over the YCS.

...and I totally respect Yvsa's stance on the YCS and Foxy Folly, but personally I like the look of the YCS a little better. Granted, I have not handled the FF, but this last run of YCS was just perfect for my needs. Having not handled the FF, I would say that the YCS would be the khuk I would take with me if I could have just one khuk for an extended period of time. Is it my favorite in my collection? No, but it's up there. It does what it was designed to do though. I would not feel ill equipped to construct a shelter, build a fire, or ward off a cougar attack with just the main blade of the YCS. Plus it's BEAUTIFUL!;)

This is exactly what I was thinking. I really like the way the YCS looks but Ysva's opinion has to carry a little weight since he's handled them both and handled a lot more Khuks than me.

The good news is that you can't go wrong with either of them. The other guys tend to love their FF, and I have logged several hours of heavy chopping with my YCS with no edge problems or even losening of the inlays. Heck it really is a do it all khuk. One day I was clearing trees with it, then the next it was shipped off to Dan to get a facelift, then it cut my wedding cake, then just last weekend it was used to split some fence posts;)
The onlything that i would caution is that this new run of YCS' have a pretty fat handle. Also, with it being a chiruwa it would be pretty hard to modify the diameter. Well, a lot more difficult that must sanding the solid handle of the FF.

I l.ike them both :D

What makes it a Chiruwa?

Leatherface, Chiruwa is a fancy word for a slab handled khuk. A lot of people call such a knife a "full" tang, but we find that that calling it such might confuse others as the standard rat/kangaroo tang that is peened through the bottom of most HI khuks is indeed a "full" tang as well as it goes totally or fully through the handle. So, anytime you hear chiruwa, just think of the 16.5" chiruwa AK bowie with it's pinned slab grip:thumbup:
Chiruwa is supposed to be stronger than a standard khuk tang, but this is pretty silly because neither is going to break on you if properly forged. The chiruwa tends to transmit more shock to the user's arm due to the lack of material that would deaden the force. However, some have noted that in a "poop hits the fan" situation, that a chiruwa would be easier to rehandle than a standard khuk. Personally, they are both fine for me. I like traditional handled khuks a little better as they tend to be a little smaller in diameter than the chiruwa's, and I have smallish hands. Also, in a poop hits the fan situation, i think my survival knowledge would wear out long before my knife did. YMMV:)

The FFs come in at 24oz while the YCSs at about 2lbs. The FFs are therefore more comfortable to carry on extended hikes. Another thing with the YCS is that the three tools that go with it add to the weight as well as make the scabbard top heavy and a bit awkward. I like Yvsa's suggestion of the FF with the YCS kardas.

More perspectives, taken in haste.

And..

Think I'll make a light box...
Any one have an example???

Just my opinion.. Get em both!
YCS = Authority

FF = Artistry! Hear it sing. I kid you not!

Having expended considerable effort, energy, and creative scatalogical verbiage in the removal of an undersized (for me) handle from one of Rusty's WWII models that I bought via Gin, I can't EVER imagine a handle coming off in ANY situation.

Besides, that's why we own multiples, right? Right?

My take on the FF vs YCS dilema. Yes, I too have agonized over this choice. Pics like the beautifully done ones Brent has posted ( ) didn't make the choice easier. Two things made my mind up firmly. (When I say this it is still my goal to own both, but one must prioritize.)

1. Yvsa's opinion. Nuff said.

2. Handle inlays. I gotta be able to ajust the size and fit of the handles for user khuks. If you get to sanding the inlaid handle and aren't careful/lucky you may sand through the inlay. That would be unsightly and on a beautiful collector type piece such as the YCS.

So I went FF...still on order, so no review yet.
