contrary to popular belief it is not china that will take over the world but in fact cougars:D

I believe it the broader access to info/news. I put this on another thread previously. I lived in CO during the mid-90s. There were several Cougar attacks, with two or three fatalities. And these were only the ones in the vicinity of Colorado Springs. It seemed to not go beyond the local news.

Unfortunately in Canada, if someone were to shoot the courgar with a handgun, the person would likely go from hero status to being charged by the police with a firearm offence.

I read an article quite a while back that seemed to check out very well with the reporting I could find (sorry, no reference).

The basic claim was that cougar attacks can be divided into two categories with very different outcomes.
1) attacks by adult cougars - uniformly fatal without a struggle
2) attacks by juvenile cougars - variable results, cougars sometimes driven off

One site with statistics is http://www.cougarinfo.org/

What offense would they be charged with???

In Canada handguns are a restricted weapon. A person may get a carrying permit if their is a lawful reason to move the gun (such as from your home to the shooting range) but carrying a handgun for self defence is only allowed by Peace Officers,

There may be a few odd exceptions such as carrying a handgun for animal protection under some of the Provincial Mining Acts.

To answer your question, the offense would be "carrying a restricted weapon."

For Canada: Short barreled, lever-action, trapper-style carbine in 44 mag.

I too was attacked by a Cougar last week:

I saw no real issue with it - and personally hope cougar attacks are on the rise.

There are two trail camera pics going around here. One shows a large cougar killing a nice buck under a feeder and the other is a large cougar under a feeder. Purported to be in different locations. Be careful around feeders late in the afternoon.

Technically they could. Your only allowed to discharge a restricted firearm on a shooting range designated by the government as "safe". you can't hunt with them either.

Your not really allowed to shoot any gun in your backyard unless it's zoned as such. Basically if your on a farm, not in Victoria. They'd overlook it for a mother saving her 7 year old boy though.
