yes, i really meant tail not tale :) this dog wouldn't let her owner drag her away until i gave her a couple of pats on the head and took her picture.

bright yellow fungus i think. almost all of the weirdest things i've seen in the woods are fungus.

a tiny sassafras very close to my base camp - never noticed it there before.

a downed oak branch gave me an opportunity to test out my new fiddleback forge 12" machete.

gotta love machetes - thin and tip-heavy means it'll bite deep!

another weird fungus.

dead-standing oak...the axe will get a workout next time.

i didn't get much of anything else done since i spent most of the time gathering firewood for future trips.

true scandi - only sharpened with dmt coarse and fine for awhile now (no stropping or micro-bevel). it looks a lot more beat up in person!

Very cool photos, awesome camp set up. Most places down here in sj require permits to use and as a result are over camped and crowded

Great pics, as always.

Something funny, I was eating spam the other day, for the first time in two decades.

I bought the spam, because of your posts camping. I took a group of Boy Scouts on an overnight canoe trip. I bought two cans of Jalapeno spam for the boys to try. They were not interested (We had already fed them Mexican soup and hotdogs).

So I had two cans of spam.

I made a fried Ramen dish fried with eggs, spam, and topped with plain yogurt and Siracha sauce.

Then I, I tried it in breakfast burritos.

I thought of your camping threads when eating it!

Awesome pics JV3! The new bacon flavor has reenergized my love for meat in a can. It's funny that with all of those great photos the topic still focuses on SPAM. The unofficial meat of W&SS. :D

thanks! go up north - there's plenty of shelters here that don't require a permit...or off-trail along the a.t. and all that.

Nice lunch choice! Spam- The anytime meat. Cool pics too.

thanks! spam was my reward for all that hard work i did gathering firewood.

Nice place you got there J...might have to come visit some time.

thanks! my camp is your camp, john. let me know when you're up for an overnighter. it's not that far from where we camped last time actually.

haha, thanks! i gotta try your recipe one of these days.

for some reason the local supermarket only carries spam and spam lite - none of those jalapenos and other flavors i've heard about. then i found out from another poster that spam came in a re-usable tin too, like a giant altoids tin, and as usual none to be found locally. i need to go to another city or two one of these days and hunt some of them down!

thanks! i need to hunt those different flavored spam one of these days - i keep reading about them.

haha, spam is indeed at home here in w&ss :D i was really sweating a lot that day with several hours of gathering firewood. i easily drank over a gallon of water and i needed something salty too - spam to the rescue!

Nice pics, JV3!

HELLO!

great pics man. looks like a nice little outing. I'm really loving all fiddleback forge blades that I have seen. definitely want to get one in the future. thanks for sharing

So how do you like that Spyderco bushcrafter? It looks like a good blade.

So true! Spam is good and quite versatile. My daughter recently gave me a couple cans of the jalapeno spam...I need to try it out.

Nice pics, JV3!

thanks, daizee!

Thanks for sharing.

you're welcome!

thanks, man! if you're looking to get a 12" it seems to be the most in demand so jump on it right away if you spot one available.

So how do you like that Spyderco bushcrafter? It looks like a good blade.

it's the most comfortable handle i've ever handled (comparing it to a fiddleback forge arete, blind horse knives bushcrafter, bark river bravo 1, and battle creek knives to name a few competitors with highly contoured handles too) so naturally it has become my most used woods knife by far.

not surprising, the only handle that comes close in comfort is the mora 120/other moras with oval handles:

Sweet JV3.....anytime spent in the woods is good, but time in the woods with sharp tools AND spam counts as a great day!!!

Nice post as always.

thanks!

I really like the looks and size, of that machete.

the 12" is probably the most in-demand (i often see the other sizes in stock but never the 12) so if you want one jump on it if you see one.

Beautiful pics and loving that machete.

thanks! i actually got to use it in the backyard some more the other day. despite the thickness it actually cut shrubs and twigs almost as well as a much thinner machete, no doubt because of the scandi grind...and that tall blade makes that 'twang sound like a true machete should :)

here are my current machetes..it's starting to work it's way towards being a favorite along side the lite machete (very top).
