For your amusement, a dirk or ballock dagger. (correct me if I'm wrong on the terminology). Handmade, carbon steel, 17" overall, 1/4" spine. Don't know the maker. If anyone recognizes the bear paw mark with the initials LB, please let me know.

hi steve,
that's a nice knife, i've been keeping my eyes peeled for a nice ballock dagger for a while now. that one seems to have a bit of the celt in it....

p.s. - since you've changed your avatar & grown a beard, i've had a picture taken of me with my hat on so's that y'all can see i'm not you, just your older twin....Linky

Steve, that is really nice. I had no idea they came that long; for some reason I was thinking 12-13" was about max on these. Guess I wasn't paying attention.

LB? Maybe Bura has been doing some side work? ;)

Thanks for sharing.

Norm

not only do we look alike, we like a lot of the same sharp pointy stuff, mebbe we should get a dna test. anyways, back to bollocks.:D

well, good things come in bunches, been keeping my eye out on e-pray for a good kidney/ballock dagger/dirk for a while as mentioned in my earlier post, didn't see any, then steve fergeson comes up with one which is a doozy to make me drool, and today along comes this one with one bidder, i managed to make it two & won it. turns out the militaria shop it was in was only a half hour away, so i drove there & picked it up less than 2 hours after the auction!

11.25" double edged diamond shaped High Carbon steel tempered blade, sharp,
4.5" figured wood grip carved with the traditional ballock guard & round grip,
end of tang is peened where it comes thru the pommel end.
double-layered leather dangle sheath (could use a chape, methinks)

there is a maker's marrk on the ricasso which looks like a circ le with small gap at the cardinals
which can be seen in the photo. anyone have an idea who's mark it might be?

p.s. - when it rains it pours, there are two more bollock daggers on ebay uk for later tonite, nice scabbards with belt frogs and steel chapes, but mild steel blades, fairly cheap as of this writing, larger one looks like nice wood pattern. caveat emptor......i'm not bidding on them as i gots mine! :p

Nice dagger bro. :)

Say, I know you're in the UK, but you don't type with an accent.;) Are you originally from the States?

yup. family is from the piney grove area of cullman county, alabama, west-ish from hartselle & not too far from the loverly tennessee river & decatur, alabama, which is easier to find on the map. being that memaw was full blooded blackfoot, i might say the family has been living there for thousands of years & be truthfull. of course with the years, we've diversified & are a mix of german, english, israeli, etc. but remain rednecks at heart & proud of it. we are also related to billy carter (jimmy was the black sheep of the family as he lost his redneck roots somewhere). (i'm from the german descended side of the family).

my dad was a US Postal Inspector, so we travelled/moved alot & i went to HS & university in NY, spent 5 yrs. active duty in the USCG in the late 60's/early 70's (& 8 yrs active reserve) and have mostly been working in Saudi & then the UK since the 80's.
