Hello all,
When using the DMT Aligner with benchstones, what level of results can you get? Can it produce results that are comparable to an Edge Pro (assuming quality stones are used, such as Shaptons)?

Thanks,
Dave

Pretty damn close. But it takes more concentration with the DMT Aligner. This is my 'go to' sharpening system, and I'm satisfied with the results. I can do marginally better with my EdgePro, but there is a lot more set-up involved, and often not needed for the job at hand.

Never used my DMT Aligner with benchstones only with the plastic stone holder
Excellent results
Perfect bevels, way better than freehanding on waterstones

I use the small DMT 4" stones in the plastic holder with the guide rod
I mainly sharpen Queen slipjoints in D2
I go from E course to E fine
I then strop with white compounds
Once the knife is sharp it does not do back on the Aligner, I strop and if needed freehand with E Fine and strop

I'm not nearly as good at sharpening as most people here, but I will offer you my experience.
A DMT (or Lansky) clamp/guide is a great help when learning to sharpen on stones (or sandpaper on glass). Helps keeping a steady angle and developing a muscle memory for freehanding. Now I've come to a point where I can touch up my edges freehand and still use the clamp for reprofiling, so it is working for me. Small (narrow/thin) blades are harder to clamp, but if you use modern folders that won't be an issue (I only own, carry and use traditional knives).
Can't give much feedback on stones though.
Considering the price, it might be worth a try. :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I tried it today with a King combination benchstone. I got good results. I was surprised that a chef's knife worked well; I thought it would be too long. A boning or utility knife worked well, too. I'll try Shaptons tomorrow or so. This might be a good 'go to system' when time is limited (or simplicity desired).

Good sharpening,
Dave
