I got to thinking about my assortment of blades over the past couple of days, and it hit me that none of the blades I currently own are or will ever be museum pieces, so I might as well use them up while they're in my care. I used to be worried about damaging them in any way, shape or form, but now I know I will probably never get even remotely close to the level of abuse a well-built knife can take. It also helps that companies with outstanding warranties (ESEE, Bussekin, etc.) will happily fix or replace your knife for little-to-no cost. I got enjoyment just from drooling over them, but now I plan on actually using them for things, I feel like I'll love them even more.

The trees in my woods better watch out; I've got a big, tough chopper and I'm not afraid to use it anymore! :D

I have never bought a gun or knife to look at. All of mine get used, and I don't care if they get scratched up. I don't buy them thinking about their resale value, because I never sell them. I give them away to family members, to keep them in the family. The lone exception is my family heirloom guns and knives. My Dad used the heck out of his stuff when he was alive, and the scratches and dents on the hardware he left me are precious and priceless to me. I wish those scratches could talk. Even when I buy Glocks, I break out the Dremel tool the day I get them home and grind down the finger grip protrusions until they fit my hand perfectly. I think my kids will enjoy seeing the tracks I will leave behind one day, as much as I enjoy seeing my Dad's.

I think you are right. I love guns, knives, and guitars, and even thought I can't afford anything expensive, even if I had something rare, collectable, or expensive, it would get used. Otherwise it might as well be a poster (just my oppinion, I know some people feel otherwise) If it was something I felt shouldn't be used from a historical standpoint, I would donate it to a museum that could care for it better than I could and allow others to enjoy it as well.

I hope my kids (who aren't even born yet) will enjoy some of the things that I leave behind, but if I have to choose between using them and leaving them to my kids, they are just going to have to buy their own!

A well used knife shows character. I don't know if you have, or are planning on having children, a knife that you've used passed on down to them would be a cherished thing. I know it was in my case! :D

IMO, you've made an excellent choice!
